I am both disappointed and relieved that there is another book in the series after this one. While I had expected this to be a trilogy, there are too many complications to resolve in a third book, so Nile’s misadventures will continue in a fourth book or more? I feel that this third book is too short, and I wish it had ended at a more settled point. Instead, it feels like it stopped at a commercial break. The writing continues to be excellent, and the inclusion of a couple of new characters works well to build additional tension. The action continues, but it is not as densely packed as in the previous books. I recommend this book to readers who have enjoyed the first two books in the series as they are all wonderfully written.
Sea and Sand continues the tumultuous adventure of Princess Nile Greysik. Much like its predecessors, it includes cannons, magic, and Nile hatching crazy schemes to the chagrin of superiors and subordinates alike.One of the strengths of this book is the addition of co-narrator Kyra (unrelated, but this is the 3rd book I've read with a Kyra in as many weeks). She quickly joins the main squad in terms of depth of character and giving emotional weight to the story. Her part of the narration offers a balance to Nile's fast-paced descriptions of ship life and her inner struggles.Speaking of struggles: as hinted in the book description, Nile and Domenic continue to butt heads. However, there is growth and resolution so perhaps there's hope.Tamiath receives a disappointing amount of page time, and most of this is in the beginning exposition. This is understandable, as he is not a naval officer, but we spent so much time getting to know him at the end of the last book that I missed his presence in this one.Overall, Sea and Sand is a solid read. The beginning was slow, and it made me start to fear for all the things I really wished would not happen (Nile's obstinacy, manipulation through secret revealing, unnecessary angst because of miscommunication), but these did not come to pass. By the second half I was riveted, for the action but also for the development in Nile and Kyra.Note: I received a free e-copy from a giveaway.
Another excellent book in this series. Lots of action and adventure with a touch of romance. Many interesting characters and new villains to deal with. Great twist and turns taking the book where the reader least expects it to go. Great writing.My only trouble with these books is how they end suddenly and not with a complete ending but not really with a cliff hanger either, just odd ending choices by the author.Highly recommended reading for anyone who loves sea adventures, magic, and fantasy.
Princess Nile Greysik gets a berth on board a ship in the Felielle Navy to fight against the Tirik invaders. It’s her role to secure an alliance with the nationalistic Diante Empire. A disrespectful crew undermines her authority and also looks askance at a mysterious empath who ends up on the ship. They make the harrowing journey and arrive at the port where Nile is given a diplomat’s welcome. No sooner does she greet the Diante representatives than a horrifying enemy attacks. Her special powers might be no match for the powerful mages they have in their grasp. It will take all her ingenuity and that of her closest friends to save them all.
Nutshell review for those who haven’t read the TIDES books: this is an excellent series of tall-ship adventure in an intriguing world with full-blooded characters, a tough, smart, flawed heroine, intrigue, and Magic! If you like any of the above I recommend you dive in with the excellent prequel novella, FIRST COMMAND, or take the plunge with the first full novel, AIR AND ASH.For those who have read the earlier books, I highly recommend SEA AND SAND. Nile is back in full form, and so is Domenic. Their relationship gets complicated by the demands of rank and hierarchy, while they try to get the Diante Empire to join the Lyron League against the Tirik Republic’s war.Many characters I love are back – Tam, and Aaron, and Quinn. So is Catsper (whom I also love), and we get surprising, and revealing, insights into that enigmatic man.I can’t say more for fear of spoilers, except to add that while this doesn’t end on the edge of a cliff, it does beg for another book. Which thankfully is coming!Note: this book is dark enough that I wouldn’t recommend it for the youngest of teens.
With out spoiling, it’s fair to say Lidell continues the best qualities of her Tides series with ‘Sea And Sand.’First, she continues the story of Ash, a young woman juggling royal duties, naval aspirations, and trying to manage her complicated marriage and relationship to her true love.Next, besides the core characters, Lidell adds Kyra, a woman with little interest in the ongoing wars yet finds herself part of events larger than she could have expected.Finally, when the book goes to the unexpected.. damn does it go there.If new to the series, I recommend starting from the beginning. These are brisk, enjoyable reads. But do read them, and enjoy.
Alex Lidell continues the wonderful series in this Tides book 3.She gives the reader all of he action and suspense we come to know and love, but with new twists and new characters, especially our new narrator Kyra.Nile and Domenic Continue to deliver the excitement with romance and also butting heads as usual.It all comes together for a wonderful adventure only Alex can provide.Thank you Alex for a suburb tale!
Even more political and action packed than before. With more characters introduced and higher stakes. This next chapter in the series keeps you on your toes. Can't wait for the next installment!
