When an author has a phenomenal debut novel—one far better than most authors ever write in their lifetimes, one can’t help but be concerned that it might be a “one-hit-wonder.”I loved J’Nell Ciesielski’s Among the Poppies. It had everything an excellent novel should. Fabulous writing. Excellent characterization. Sizzling plots that aren’t too sensational or predictable. Not to mention the ability to take the “old” and make it fresh and new again. So, when an advance copy of The Songbird and the Spy landed in my mailbox, I couldn’t help but be both excited and a little nervous. Would I love it as much? Could she possibly impress me so much two books in a row—the first and only two books she’d had published? Kind of um… unlikely, you know? One thing made me forge onward.I had no reason to assume it wouldn’t be awesome, and the synopsis on the back of the book begged me to read.Unfortunately, I can’t say this book is as good as the first. As much as I want to assure you that it is, it isn’t. It’s better—far better. In fact, I cannot wait to read her next. And the next. Because you see, when someone can write about two different eras with such authenticity and grace, you’ve got an author to watch.J’nell Ciesielski’s writing has all the beauty of lyrical writing without the devolution into purple prose that so many authors slip into. She wields her descriptive brush with a careful hand. Not once did I get overwhelmed with the description. Not once did I not picture the scene with vivid clarity. The characters felt like people you could meet, talk to, despise, love. We’ve seen the French Resistance, undercover Brits, brash Americans—it’s all been done. But Ciesielski takes what we’ve seen and twists it, much like she did in Among the Poppies to give us something new. Claire isn’t French, but she’s there, in France, hiding from the Germans just like anyone. The German officer… isn’t. Nothing is as we expect it to be… and yet it is.The Germans, we expect to invade. We expect the Brits to fight those Germans. We expect the French to resist their occupation. And yes, we even expect the Americans to make an appearance. And in this book, we have it all and without it being the same old, same old.Brilliantly written, beautifully orchestrated, The Songbird and the Spy will grip your heart and hold it hostage until the battle for Claire and Michael ends and a victor emerges. It’s already on my 2019 best reads list.I seriously doubt anything can bump it off.Recommended for anyone who loves excellently written historical fiction, romance that feels authentic and not cheesy, and details that never cross into the anachronistic. However, if you enjoy insipid girls with hackneyed plots, I’d stay away.

Romance with a healthy dose of intrigue that will keep you turning the pages. A young American music student is caught behind the lines in occupied France during WWII. Her French relatives try to shield her, but she winds up alone and afraid until a kindly brother and sister take her into their home. They run a local pub, and she sings for her supper--literally. They pass her off as a French girl. When a certain German captain catches her eye, she does everything in her power to avoid him, but he won't go away. The German captain isn't what he seems either, and that revelation starts a whole new round of tension, conflict, and danger. A wonderful story by the same author as "Among the Poppies." Well worth reading!

I liked the people in the book--I came to care about them. The title caught my eye, because I am a songbird too. I liked that fact that the book could hold my interest, while at the same time, remaining clean and decent. I don't have a lot of time to read, and that being the case, I don't want to waste the time I have on junk. I found the book believable because although I was a child, I still remember a lot about WWII. This is the first book I have read by this author, but I think it will not be the last.

3.5 stars"Do not jeopardize mission for one woman."Captain Michael Reiner of the His Majesty's Royal Air Force is deeply entrenched, posing as a Nazi officer and communications specialist in German occupied France. Imagine his surprise when he realizes that the lovely songbird entertaining his soldiers every night in the local tavern is not who she claims to be either. Ironically, she is much more dangerous that anyone realizes, for whether she remembers it or not, she saw Michael before he donned his German uniform.American music student Claire Baudin has become trapped in France after watching her relatives get whisked away by German soldiers. Desperate to find members of the French Resistance who could transport her over the country's heavily guarded enemy lines, she ends up in a small village trying to escape notice. When her musical abilities allow her to earn a small wage, it becomes more and more difficult to camouflage her true intentions, especially when a handsome German captain by the name of Michael Reichner shows her unsolicited attention.A nicely written story, bringing to mind the intense courage that so many exhibited during one of the darkest hours in world history. Author J'nell Ciesielski is certainly exhibiting her love of history by bringing it back to life on the written page.

Many reviewers consider this book to be a contribution to theology, despite the fact that there is almost no reference to religion in the book. That suits me because I consider religious arguments about science to be uniformly spurious. I find religion (but not spirituality) to be bizarre, however standard part of human experience.Accordingly there is not much about creationism/intelligent design. I consider all such arguments flimsy and unworthy of consideration. Of course evolution could have been guided by a Creator, but there is no evidence for this. There are strong speculations, but I don't live my life by speculations. It is equally silly to claim that science proves the non-existence of God. I know a lot more physics that most of the people who claim this (who limit ther knowledge to pop culture book by Hawking or whomever). I can assure the reader that such claims are posturing and hand-waving.There are two serious issues dealt with in this book. First, the nature of consciousness. Second the status of free will. Let me deal with the second first. This is Miller's finest and most informative chapter. My argument for free will is, like Miller's, that the critiques of free will are all faulty, and free will is as self-evident as anything else in our lives. Of course it might be an "illusion" but so might anything else, including my having a body. Miller's most considered argument FOR free will, though is faulty. He claims that the idea is self-contradictory because if there is no free will there is not justification for trying to convince others of this fact. This is just false. If there is no free will people will still try to convince others of all sorts of things, and their endeavors may be effective according to the laws of physics. Is there free will? Who knows? The argument that everything must have cause is no argument against free will. I am the cause of my actions. That is all there is to it. Asserting that an action was the product of free will means "people in the position of the actor might have made a different decision." That is all we need to assert free will as a descriptive attribute. The second substantive issue Miller treats is the nature of consciousness. As an evolutionist, he wants to explain the appearance of conscious minds in biota as a wholly natural, physical process. However, no one has any idea how consciousness could appear in a wet chemical brain. Miller has no answer except to call consciousness an "emergent property" of physical cells. This is a poor excuse for an explanation. Of course there are emergent properties---the Second Law of thermodynamics is an emergent property of the laws of physics as we know them. I do agent based simulations that exhibit emergent properties. But "emergent property" is not an explanation in these cases either. It is a signal of our ignorance. So Miller has nothing to contribute to our understanding of consciousness. The book is much fluff, but it made me think a bit. Kudos.Try it. You'll like it, maybe.

Fascinating counter to the "man is just another animal" interpretations of people like Richard Dawkins and a good introduction to Evolution.

I haven't completed the book, but I have to post this while it is on my mind. I am a fan of Ken R. Miller. I will update this post or submit a new review when I finished reading the book. I have read all his books and viewed his videos, and have attended two of his presentations in person. That said, I always feel somewhat sad when reading Miller's books, especially "Finding Darwin's God and this one. I feel sorry for Ken. He is obviously a highly intelligent person with a solid education. To me, he has an authoritative, charismatic presence. He is also a Roman Catholic. Nothing wrong with that; however, I feel that Dr. Miller is in real personal conflict between his science and his religion and it shows up in his writing. In these two books, it appears to me that he is desperately trying to cling to the God he grew up with and the type of God he believes exists. But, let me address what I came here for. I am a computer scientist and I just completed the part of the book where Miller argues that the brain is not a computer. He does admit to some similarities, but he displays a real ignorance of the state-of-the-art of artificial intelligence, neural networks, pattern recognition, genetic algorithms, and so on. He seems to believe that digital computers are the only type of computers around. Has he never heard of analog computers? He ends up this section with this telling sentence at the bottom of page 143: "... genuine thought remains an elusive property of that emergent delicate, self-sustaining, and self-modifying form of matter we call "life." What is "genuine thought"? I suppose passing the "Turing Test," but Miller doesn't define "thought." He says thought is a property of emergent, ..., form of matter we call "life"". Why parenthetical "life" - why not life, or more accurately, brain? Again, to me, Dr. Miller is alluding to some mystery of life, a kind of "God of the gaps" argument. Since we cannot possibly "genuinely" explain "life," then God did it. I am hoping to upgrade this review to 4 or even 5 stars, but this part was a downer.

This has been a great book to look at as my fiancé and I plan our wedding. It has brought questions to our attention that we didn’t even think to ask. A friend recommended to book to me, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone planning a destination wedding.

Planning a wedding it exciting, this book is just.. meh. It gives a 'general' overview of planning a destination wedding. For anything substantial towards my wedding planning, I have found sites like Pinterest to be far more helpful. If you can find it 'used' it might be worth the easy read but I would not recommend paying full price.

If you're planning a destination wedding, don't think twice. There is so much to do when it comes to a wedding, and this book really puts you in the correct path for beginners. Focuses on what you should do and ask and they even have a timeline that you could follow and plan. Although please note this book is catered towards The American/European continents. But in my opinion if you're planning to have your wedding somewhere in Asia or other continents, its still a good buy.

This book was extremely helpful as we were planning our caribbean destination wedding. It was concise yet thorough and I am happy to say our wedding was a success - very much due in part to this book. It does help to have a hotel wedding planner which did most of the work for us - but this book allowed us to ask educated questions and be prepared for any unknown variables. I highly recommend this book - and have passed this on to many friends who also had destination weddings.

An excellent choice for anyone trying to plan a destination wedding. I'm still in the process of planning mine, but so far this book has been a huge help. Without it, I wouldn't have even known where to start. This book includes time lines; to-do lists; tips on picking the perfect location, what to do if you do/don't plan on visiting your location beforehand, hiring vendors, and planning weekend activities; plus a destination directory, destination wedding worksheets, and LOTS more. I would definitely recommend it to any of my friends.

I bought this for my daughter when she got engaged. She loves it. She found it very useful, with lots of ideas & suggestions. She was very happy with it & has recommended it to her friends.

Great engagement gift book! I never would have found this had it been for Amazon. Very pleased with my purchase and the price was excellent as well.

This book is GREAT! It gave me a ton of great ideas and advice on how to plan a successful destination wedding. I've received a lot of positive feedback from my invited guests on every bit of advice I implemented. Things like adding some local currency in the save-the-dates and presenting the wedding as a organized and professional dream vacation have helped more guests commit to attending. There are so many great tips, ideas, and options. I've read three other books on Destination Weddings, but this is the only book you'll need. Kudos to The Knot, they've done it again!

The Quadruple Object, by Graham Harman

Review

In this book we again encounter Harman's voice and the extraordinary force of his theses. Starting from an initial simplicity, they ultimately attain a degree of complexity and fascinating depth- but always step by step, in such a way that the reader is never distracted. (Quentin Meillassoux, Ecole normale superieure, author of After Finitude)

Graham Harman is a philosopher associated with the new movement of speculative realism in Continental philosophy which includes thinkers like Quentin Meillassoux, Ray Brassier, and Levi Bryant, among others. Graham Harman is unique in pursuing what he calls an object oriented philosophy (actually, I believe Levi Bryant is now pursuing an object oriented approach as well). The entire movement tends to be a reaction against what they take to be the "anti-realism" of most Continental philosophy. This book serves as a good, short, general introduction to Harman's object oriented approach. Harman makes many arguments throughout this book, but I think his fundamental arguments can be reduced to two general claims. First, the human-world relation is in no way special. As Harman continually reiterates, there is no difference in principle between the human-world relation and the relation between fire and cotton (or any other physical objects). Real objects withdraw from human access, but the same is true of cotton in relation to fire. Fire only reacts to certain qualities of cotton. The fire does not, for example, relate to the cotton's "whiteness" but only to its "flammability". This is what I find to be the most compelling aspect of Harman's philosophy.Harman's second main argument is that objects constitute an autonomous level of reality. Harman is opposed to both "undermining" and "overmining" objects. Undermining is the attempt by philosophical materialism to reduce objects to a more fundamental level of reality (to reduce human beings to cells, and cells to atoms, etc.). Harman essentially argues for what is now known as emergence. It is a mistake to reduce humans to a lower level, but there are also objects, such as societies, that are larger than humans, and it is equally a mistake to reduce those higher level objects to human beings. Each level achieves a certain degree of autonomy, and the world is ultimately constituted by the relations between autonomous objects at different levels. Overmining, on the other hand, is what happens when empiricists reduce objects to independent sense qualities that are only unified within a human consciousness. This also annihilates the autonomy of the object, and makes the unity of the object depend on a unifying act carried out by consciousness.Harman works out a fourfold structure that is loosely based on Heidegger's notion of the fourfold between: real objects, real qualities, sensual objects, and sensual qualities. Harman then attempts to explain the tensions and interactions between the members of this fourfold structure. To give only a single example, Harman argues for indirect causation, which means that real objects are never related to other real objects, but only relate indirectly to each other through the other three poles. What I found most interesting and compelling about Harman's fourfold structure was his brief taxonomy of previous philosophies each of which attempts to reduce all of reality to one pole within Harman's fourfold structure. For example, strict empiricists tend to reduce everything to bundles of sense qualities and deny any reality to the other three poles, scientific naturalism tends to consider sense qualities to be nothing but epiphenomena and tends to reduce everything to real qualities (mass, momentum, etc.), phenomenology reduces everything to sense objects or the intentional correlates of consciousness, while Aristotelian essentialism tends to reduce everything to real objects or unified substances.Against all of these forms of reductionism Harman asserts a necessary tension between all four of these poles. Harman's philosophy is, therefore, a radically anti-reductionist philosophy. Harman writes that "Instead of embracing the reductive positions of the correlationist, the naturalist, the phenomenologist, or the classical realist, object-oriented philosophy gathers the grains of truth found in all four" (143). Harman is essentially providing a taxonomy of previous philosophies and attempting to point out their one sidedness. They each emphasize one aspect of reality while neglecting the others. I find this aspect of his analysis quite compelling. Harman is able to present a comprehensive philosophical standpoint that is able to account for the limited validity of other, less comprehensive, philosophical standpoints.I do have some minor reservations about certain aspects of Harman's object oriented approach to philosophy, but despite my minor reservations, there is no doubt in my mind that there is a lot that is of great value in Harman's philosophy. Harman also is pretty liberal in his interpretations of previous philosophers. Harman's summary of previous philosophers can often seem overly simplistic or even wrong at times. However, Harman is not attempting to write a scholarly work on Kant, Husserl, or Heidegger, or any other philosopher. Harman is attempting to present his own original philosophy, and in that task he is quite successful. All in all, I would say this book serves as an ideal introduction to Harman's philosophy, and object oriented philosophy, in general.

I personally approach OOO from the perspective of someone who doesn't have sufficient familiarity with Continental Philosophy. This book focused quite a lot on very formal aspects of philosophy and how OOO relates to it, and I expected something a little more along the lines of other OOO material that I've read. It is very enjoyable but much more dense than I expected and definitely focuses heavily on relating OOO to other continental philosophers and philosophical traditions (heavy on the ontology). I would recommend for someone who is well-versed in philosophy.

This is the best book I have read on Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO). The book was published in 2010, and perhaps earlier in blog form, and somewhere along the way I read the material, either browsing at a bookstore, or at the blog. The material is highly inspiring for concepts of objective metaphysics and logic. However, some readers may be disappointed that the focus is on phenomenology, a topic that some consider abstruse. You can see the results of my inspiration in a more developed form at: The Dimensional Philosopher's Toolkit, not to be confused with Baggini and Fosl's book, The Philosopher's Toolkit. My focus is more on coherency as a concept, although some of that is present in Harman's book as well. Essentially, both Harman, Meillassoux, and myself have been developing responses to Popper's rather disappointing book Objective Knowledge. It's an interesting area, and particuarly in Harman's case, the reader will be gifted with an eloquent writing style and rather surprising ideas. This book came before The Dimensional Philosopher's Toolkit, and so far as mainstream philosophy is concerned, it might be better, although it has fewer information-age takeaway ideas. Certainly Harman is considered closer to the inner circle of true philosophers. But I think my book could be worth reading for sheer content concerns.

This is great .

This is original philosophy, a breaktrhough in achieving a realist, non-humanist thought. Harman converges only tangencially with phenomenology and poststructuralism, obtaining the best from them in order to open a course that is neither "Continental" nor "Anglo."

same this is a philosophjcal essay what means I like or I love childish way i of grading ! I will stop to sanswer this absurdi rating of things and boooks

Herman is the main founder of the Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO) which is an attempt to lift the level of "materials" (objects) in the metaphysical discussions which are traditionally tilted toward human-centrism. In a world in which man-made ecological problems have become ubiquitous, developing a metaphysics which at its core acknowledges the "materiality" of stuff (without giving in to any anthropocentric compromises) is an important part of solution. Herman's OOO is ambitious enough to be exactly this: a meta-physics which can be used as the foundation of a new environmental philosophy.
