From the Back Cover

In this superb guidebook, a skilled practitioner of figure drawing demonstrates how to achieve mastery of anatomy through careful, knowledgeable articulation of the muscles and bones lying beneath the skin. Joseph Sheppard's concise instructions have been carefully integrated with over 250 halftone illustrations and over 180 line drawings to lead artists one step at a time through the techniques required in rendering human anatomy convincingly. The opening chapter of the book presents the special techniques involved in mastering human proportion. The chapters that follow each deal with a separate part of the body: the arm, hand, leg, foot, torso, head, and neck (with special coverage of facial features and expressions) and the complete figure. Each of these chapters follows a basic format that combines drawings of the featured body portion from many different angles, coverage of the specific bones and muscles involved, a table of muscle origins and insertions, and coverage of surface anatomy and depictions of the body part in a variety of positions. Joseph Sheppard taught drawing, anatomy, and painting for many years at the Maryland Institute of Art. He is the author of several books of art instruction, and the recipient of a number of distinguished prizes and awards for his sculptures and other works of art, many of which are in the collections of art museums across America.

Great detailed drawings. A useful guide for those who want to learn the layers of anatomy, rather than just seeing what's on the surface. I love how this book shows sequential drawings of the body that add more and more muscles each time. That way, I can learn what's behind what, and really have a solid understanding of the human figure. However, I wouldn't say this is a be-all-end-all anatomy book. Rather, it s a great supplement to the wonderful beginner anatomy books that focus more on basic forms and proportion. It bridges the gap between a book like Hampton's Figure Drawing Design and Invention and a fairly complex (for artists) anatomy book like Stephen Rogers Peck.

I've been collecting anatomy for artists books for awhile and this is the best one in my collection to date. I like it because it shows each body part's bones, tendons/connective tissues and muscles from several different angles. It also includes drawings of the body parts' external views in several orientations. The drawings are done with scientific detail but are clearly meant for artists to use in rendering the human form with understanding of its structural underpinnings. I've copied illustrations from this book in my sketch book as observational practice and this has improved my life drawing. A worthy addition to your art practice library!

It's very good for learning anatomy. for people who are sensitive to nudity i would not recommend this book to you

Great detail. goes into depth of where the muscle attaches to the bones and the shape of the bone so you can get an overall feel of how it should appear in a 3D environment. A lot of information so I have to slowly finish it

Clear anatomical references from real bodies. Skeletons used are clearly from real bodies, not plastic models.Very clearly shows the interlocking nature of the muscles, particularly useful for ribcage and armpit muscles.

Very comprehensive book with helpful illustrations on building the body from the bones up. Love this book

Amazing book that stands the test of time!

Love this book , bought it for a great price ad got it really quickly. Books I excellent condition. A must for any artist

Encyclopedia of Spirits: The Ultimate Guide to the Magic of Fairies, Genies, Demons, Ghosts, Gods & Goddesses by Judika Illes is one of my most used reference books, both for writing research and for my own magickal practice. Illes presents a very comprehensive range of different spirits as the subtitle of the book suggests. This isn’t just a reference book though, the first 110 pages are her discussing spirits and how to work with them. These topics include but are not limited to explaining the realms of spirits, communicating with spirits, creating altars and shrines to the spirits, why spirits want to help us, how to care and feed spirits, etc. This alone is worth buying the book as it has some of the best information on the topic that is printed and presented in such a way that is readily understood by any reader.A lot of the information within the entries are rare. I used this book as one of the references for a piece I wrote about Cybele in an anthology on goddesses and I was going insane trying to figure out where she was getting some of her information. Another Amazon reviewer rudely demands where Illes is getting her information from, and whether its from a commonly mistaken ”perversion” of history. Well, since I wanted to find the sources for some of the information that she provides that I couldn’t find in any of my books (and my library is pretty extensive) or online, I began digging through academic papers and archeological surveys with the help of a ancient pagan history expert and there I found my answers. The information she provided was indeed correct, although obscure. On one hand, yes it would have been amazing if she listed all of her sources. But coming in at 1,072 pages it would be almost impossible to cite all of sources without adding a few hundred more pages. Despite this, she still cites about 300 sources in the Bibliography at the end of the book.A typical entry consists of the spirit’s name, other names they’re known by, place of origin, iconography, manifestation, history, myths, offerings, sacred animals, sacred plants, sacred numbers, elemental, planetary and color correspondences, as well as a “see also” for related spirits. Each spirit may have more or less categories within the reference just depending on what is known about the spirit and which culture it comes from. The book comes in a nice sturdy hardcover, which is great because if you’re anything like me, you’ll be referring to the book often and the hardcover keeps it from wearing out from use.

This is by far one of the most extensive books on spirits, demons, ghost, goddesses and genies from all over the world. I keep this by my bedside as a quick reference guide, you can find everything from a beloved djinna spirits, to loa, orisha's, palo, mermaid to madusa. the only thing I wish was included was a tokoloshi dwarf spirit. this encyclopedia give an writeup on just about every spirit you can think of from every culture around the globe. easily one of the best reference book on the subject. this book along with 5000 spells are the mother of all spell work and reference book, this is a complete set for witches and practitioners of any magical path. this book is a excellent reference book, while it does not contain every single spirits as I don't think such a book exist. I have other books on other spirits, demons and angels, but like I said this is the one kept at my bedside for easy reference.

I was a bit torn on buying this, because I thought a lot of the same information on spirits could be found with a Google search, but it has turned out to be a very helpful resource for several reasons, and I frequently reference it. It cannot be easily replaced by Wikipedia, as many encyclopedias can. It strikes a good balance between detail and summary and avoids the pitfall of shoving each spirit into a convenient "God of War" or "Goddess of the Moon" even when they don't quite fit - one of my biggest issues with similar encyclopedias. The materials at the beginning of the book are incredibly helpful for anyone who views spirits as more than just mythological curiosities, anyone who is interested in honoring or engaging with them. This might be the most important distinguishing feature between this book and online encyclopedias. The author speaks at length about what spirits are, how to communicate with them and work with them, how to honor them and leave offerings, how to find spirit allies, potential dangers, etc. This book goes much further than Pagan 101 resources in explaining how exactly one might go about approaching and maintaining relationships with spirits, with clear and practical tips, but without being too strict about what methods one should use. The advice is sound and flexible for a variety of spiritual paths. Generally, the author merely advocates for caution rather than drawing hard lines. As for the actual entries on the spirits, there are several advantages to just reading up on the spirits on Wikipedia. Excess detail on specific myths is stripped down so you can read the key points of each without wading through excess information - the author describes the intention of these as "to give a sense of each spirit’s basic nature in order to enable readers to identify the spirits they seek and enough practical information to work with them," as essentially "matchmaking profiles", and these certainly work well for that purpose. At the same time, it's not just bullet points - there's really valuable information included in each entry. The entries are written with the assumption that each spirit is real, not just a concept, and will often discuss the personalities of various deities and when/why people might want to invoke them. The entries will give a warning when spirits have significant conflicts with each other and shouldn't be honored side-by-side, and will mention if spirits are approachable and generally benevolent, powerful but volatile, or whatever else - stuff you'll really want to know if you plan to honor or work with a spirit. Different information is included for each spirit, but most major deity entries conclude with typical manifestations, iconography/attributes, favored people, suggested offerings, and associated animals, colors, etc, which is useful. The kindle book can be easily searched for keywords or symbols without redundancy as there is on Google - each result will bring you to a new deity rather than just the most popular spirit associated with a particular symbol, and there is an appendix which lists all the included spirits associated with earthquakes, fertility, librarians, snakes, and many other specialties. As for accuracy - so far, this seems to be a reliable resource, though I'm not an expert by any means. There is occasional material that strikes me as UPG (unverified personal gnosis), which some may see as a red flag, but also makes it more unique than many encyclopedias. When it is included and I'm familiar with the deities in question, it seems in-line with the UPG that I've seen commonly appear in neopagan communities, so it's not the author's invention. This book is free of material that is "fluffy" or oversimplistic, which is good (both of those are big red flags for me). For example, unlike many contemporary sources that reduce Freya to "Goddess of Love" and ignore her darker aspects, this book says she has "dominion over love, sex, fertility, magic, witchcraft, warcraft, death, pleasure, and glory," and explains those associations and her traditional significance. There are a few minor inconsistencies (for example, for offerings to Odin it says he "eats only sacred meat; there's little that's material that you can give him" - but in other sources, mead and whiskey are frequently listed as suitable offerings) - so you'll want to consult other sources if you're serious about honoring a particular spirit - but I haven't yet come across something that's an atrocious misrepresentation. However, there are some inconsistencies in formatting, omissions, and lack of organization that earn this only four stars. Inconsistencies in formatting - "origin" is usually included at the start of entries, but sometimes it isn't. Sometimes it will list "Greece" as the origin, and other times "Greek" - a nitpick, but if you're searching the kindle book for "Greece" to try to find all the Greek entries, you'll miss some, and that's an issue. If spirits were organized by origin, it wouldn't be, which is an organizational issue for me. There is an appendix for "Spirits and their Specialties," which is useful, but I would really have appreciated an Appendix that included the spirits listed by origin or pantheon. There have been several times I've really wanted that feature, and it wouldn't have been that hard to include. People with hard copies won't even have the luxury of a search tool to round up all the mentioned deities of any given pantheon - that would be a huge pain when exploring pantheons! As far as omissions go - another reviewer mentioned Ra, which is one of the most glaring omissions. Obviously you can't include everyone, but big omissions make me concerned. If the pantheons were filled out a bit more, extra care given to consistency, and the organization fixed, this would be a five star book for me.

I'd say 4.5 stars, the book is great. Has a lot of info, a lot of stuff I never knew about my favorite deities. It's an awesome book and I'm happy to own it. My only gripe is that I was hoping for a few beautiful pictures on the inside, maybe some color. The cover of the book is so beautiful, a hardcover as well. And 1000+ pages, I thought there might be some artwork in there. But no, it's just plain 'ol dictionary paper. My only other issue is that although this book says it's filled with 'fairies, genies, demons, ghosts, gods and goddesses', it's got everything within mythology, of every culture. It has everything, but I did a specific search for shakti (I understand, it's energy) and they didn't have it. Okay, but they didn't have unicorn either. It has aliens, not a specific alien (they have that too) just aliens. In some tales, the unicorn is a type of fairy. Not sure why they didn't have those, but perhaps the author had her reason.

...except that they don't include the 5th P&C march for some reason. Everything else is wonderful, very easy to read!

Great value!

This edition of Elgar's Enigma Variations is a very high quality print with a reasonable price. Both for study or performance purposes it is a choice to everyones personal library.

Two of the most popular works by Sir Edward Elgar(1857-1934) arethe "Enigma Variations" (a theme followed by 14 variations -1-12 being musical sketches of his friends, the 13th for his wifewith the final variation depicting the composer himself) andthe 5 "Pomp And Circumstance" marches.I feel that Dover presents these works(in full score)in a way that is very clearly read and well presented. The only problem I have with this compilation of Elgar's works has to do with the omission of Pomp And Circumstance March No. 5 (in C Major). Where is it? No. 5's liveliness is sorely missing from this group of 5 marches that Elgar wrote for manyvarious occasions (not just for graduations).Regardless, I highly recommend buying this score collection.Enjoy the rich orchestration that Elgar uses in his various worksYou'll see why Elgar is described as the Englishman who was credited as being one of the last true Romantic composers. Was this review helpful to you?

As American's we are brought up believing in the inherent goodness of the United States. Sure we had slavery and an unfortunate bout of genocide early on but we've confessed to those transgressions, grown into a more mature nation and besides... that was a LONG time ago. Unfortunately there is another seamy side to American history that leads all the way up to and includes Baghdad. The United States has had a shameful pattern of monkeying with foreign governments, overthrowing democratically elected leaders and establishing and maintaining repressive regimes. The author makes a few important points about patterns in the various regime changes. The first is that nearly all incidents of overthrow were instigated by, done at the behest of or in one instance literally performed by one or more multinational corporations. In Guatemala it was United Fruit, in Iran it was the oil industries, in Chile it was ITT and Anaconda. The pattern of leftist leaders nationalizing industry and then finding themselves removed is repeated over and over again. Venezuela's Hugo Chavez would be advised to be very careful. Regime change has been defended as a bulwark against encroaching communism or socialism but as the author states overthrows are performed, "mainly for economic reasons - specifically, to establish, promote, and defend the right of Americans to do business around the world without interference" Regime change has always required the help of a certain percentage of the public in a country, generally the wealthy elites fearing the growing power of the lower and middle class. The other issue is American morality versus "realism". Does the end justify the means and do our laws of justice cease at the border? In Iran, Guatemala, and Chili democratically elected leaders were replaced with repressive regimes. Perhaps the worst of the all was Augustus Pinochet in Chile who went on to torture and kill thousands of leftist. In Panama, Noriega was supported by the Reagan administration as long as he continued to support the Contras. Reagan also supported the corrupt Marco government in the Philippines because they permitted U.S. Naval bases to operate off the islands saying, "I don't know anything more important than those bases" I guess that would include basic human rights. The third point is that short term solutions tend to cause long term problems. Perhaps nothing the United States has ever done has caused more problems than deposing the popular Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh in favor of the Shah. The damage it created and loss of American prestige in the Middle East has been incalculable and for what? Stifling democracy and even capitalism in countries like Honduras makes the United States looks disingenuous and oppressive. Some of the blame for Castro's repressive government may lie with the United States. What Castro learned was that the United States with the help of the CIA would never allow a left leaning Democracy in Latin America so he became understandably paranoid and worked overtime to eliminate any perceived threat.Overthrow isn't just an important book it's also well written and engaging. It certainly is not a feel good book. It's like turning over a stone and seeing the mud and bugs underneath but when we bury the past we are doomed to repeat it. Would American's have been so quick to support regime change in Iraq if people were more aware of the disasters of the past? Understanding and knowing our worst mistakes is at least as important as remembering our successes. With America's opinion ratings overseas at perhaps its lowest level ever perhaps it's time for the entire nation to reflect and maybe work to have our deeds match our rhetoric.

Most Americans are outraged by Russian interference in our 2016 election. That’s because we hold dear our right to self-determination without another country determining the outcome. On the other hand, the USA has a long history of not showing the same kind of respect for the self-determination of other nations that we expect for ourselves. This book describes in shocking detail the fourteen times our country has overthrown legitimate governments – some duly elected – around the world. This is not dry history, however; Kinzer’s retelling reads like a suspense novel. The first instance came in 1893 when the American ambassador in Hawaii conspired with American planters to overthrow the native government of Queen Liliuokalani. It took 100 years for the U.S. government to recognize the error of its ways. A resolution passed Congress and signed by President Clinton in 1993 states that Congress, “apologizes to native Hawaiians on behalf of the people of the United States for the overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom on Jan. 17, 1893,” and for the subsequent “deprivation of the rights of Native Hawaiians to self-determination.”Unfortunately, there has been no similar apology to the peoples of Iran, Cuba, the Philippines, Nicaragua, Guatamala, Vietnam and Puerto Rico. Hawaii is the 50th state. If Puerto Rico ever becomes the 51st, perhaps then another apology will be forthcoming.Following Hawaii, the second overthrow came at the end of the Spanish-American War, when the McKinley administration decided to take control of several Spanish colonies, instead of liberating them to govern themselves. The “consent of the governed” did not matter to most Americans when it came to Cubans, Puerto Ricans and Filipinos. Before Congress agreed to declare war on Spain, the Teller Amendment had to be added to gain sufficient support. That Amendment declares that “the people of the island of Cuba are, and of right ought to be, free and independent. The United States hereby disclaims any disposition or intention to exercise sovereignty, jurisdiction, or control over said island.” Once the war ends. the USA intends “to leave the government and control of the island to its people.”Cuban rebels had been actively fighting Spanish rule three years, and they expected to gain their promised independence fighting alongside the Americans. Nonetheless, the Teller Amendment was quickly discarded at the end of the war as McKinley announced that the USA would rule Cuba. The new policy was embodied in the Platt Amendment of 1901, “a crucial document in the history of American foreign policy,” because versions of “plattismo” were subsequently applied to many nations in Central America and the Caribbean. Under this Amendment, which was adopted with only Republican votes, the USA agreed to end its occupation of Cuba as soon as Cubans accepted a constitution giving the U.S. the rights to maintain military bases, to supervise the treasury, and “the right to intervene for the preservation of Cuban independence or the maintenance of a government adequate for the protection of property and individual liberty.”Cubans weren’t the only Latin Americans denied self-determination. Similar domination happened to Nicaragua and Honduras, initially to protect the monopolies of a handful of American banana corporations. This interference led to generations of dictators, conflict and death. To this day, Honduras has the world’s highest murder rate, in part due to American policies. The greatest tragedy happened to the Philippines. The Filipino guerilla leader, Emilio Aguinaldo, understood that his people were promised their independence by Admiral Dewey, who later swore he made no such commitment. The USA paid $20 million to Spain for the islands. Meanwhile, the rebels had elected an assembly, produced a constitution, and proclaimed the independent Republic of the Philippines in 1899, with Aguinaldo as president. The new government was determined to defend its independence. McKinley had other plans. The war to suppress Philippine independence lasted three years and led to tens of thousands of deaths. Recent estimates put the total at 250,000. U.S. troops used torture and massacre of civilians suspected of aiding the guerillas. The New York Post wrote that American troops “have been pursuing a policy of wholesale and deliberate murder.” This war was one of the worst episodes in Filipino history. Filipinos were denied their independence until 1946.The first CIA overthrow of a foreign government was in Iran in 1953. The second came the following year in Guatamala. Both countries had democratically elected governments, and both were forcibly replaced by dictators – the Shah in one, and a former army officer in the other. The long-term effects were tragic. The next target for overthrow was in 1963 when JFK decided to remove the Diem regime that the USA had installed in South Vietnam. A friend of America, Diem was murdered and the war was lost anyway.Chile was the next target. The CIA had interfered in elections there since 1964 to prevent a socialist from winning. After Salvador Allende won, the CIA fomented his overthrow in 1973, installing a brutal dictator, Gen. Pinochet.Other targets were the governments in Grenada in 1983, Panama in 1989, and Iraq in 2003. Kinzer compares George W. Bush to William McKinley: both believed they were morally justified, and neither anticipated the deadly insurgencies that followed in the Philippines and in Iraq.“Do as I say, not as I do,” isn’t persuasive for children, much less to the rest of the world. American officials frequently assert the right to intervene militarily or otherwise whenever and where ever it is deemed in the American interest to do so, even to protect the interest of American corporations. “In almost every case,” writes Kinzer, “overthrowing the government of a foreign country, has, in the end, led both that country and the United States to grief.” Consequently, Americans should recognize the sources of anti-American resentment, and be less hypocritical in denouncing other nations who follow our example. If it’s wrong for others, then by what principle of international law is it justified when we do it? ###
