This book was required reading material for a graduate-level program evaluation course. Throughout my many years of being a student, I have had the sincere displeasure of reading some of the most boring textbooks in existence. This one, however, takes the cake. It does so in finding the perfect balance between small font, thin pages, minimal white space and maximum words per page layout. The absence of an eBook option is further insult to injury. The authors do little to reinforcement of key concepts in a succinct fashion. Truly I believe there was an incentive to pack in as many words as possible. Entire chapters could be replaced with 2-3 pages of content. The book has a tone/pace which leads me to believe the authors had intentionally deployed in an effort to subliminally coerce students to hear Ben Stein as they slowly navigate from page to page to never-ending page.If you're reading this, it's likely because some misguided faculty at your own higher learning institution has made the terrible, unfortunate decision to use this book as a part of their curriculum. If that is the case I offer you one small bit of advice: Rent this book thus denying the authors and publisher an added sale. Because truly, unless you are on the market for the worst textbook on the planet, no one deserves earnings from the sale of this text. BONUS: If you rent, you might get an already marked up copy from the poor souls who rented before you. Just ignore the tiny scribbles pleading for help and for the book to end.

The information is presented in an organized manner, though the subject matter is dry. I found it helpful to skip to the ends of chapters and read the important bullets and use the prompting questions there to go back and skim the chapter for the pertinent information. The book aside, I genuinely did not enjoy the Kindle presentation of this. Maybe because I rented it, but it could be the same for buying it, I could not view it on more than one device. Being that it is a textbook this was rather terrible to find out halfway through the semester when I was separated from my normal laptop. I normally love the Kindle setup, but this book isn't readable on the Kindle itself or the online reader, an app must be used which would be alright if it had the same functionality. That being said, the app does allow for note taking and highlighting which are nice.

I can't believe this book has gotten so many low ratings. It is clear, provides good examples, and has excellent diagrams that explain the few paragraphs before it.I have been teaching ten years and am currently in graduate school for higher education administration. I enjoy the book. If you are not a teacher, however, I can see why it might be difficult to see the reason for it if you have nothing to relate it to from your work life experiences.Only suggestions: peruse the chapters first for the diagrams rather than highlighting and breaking it down yourself first--will save you lots of time. Also, the concepts are usually clear enough that you can skip many of the example paragraphs they throw in each section.

This text was pretty exhaustive but they should have included several examples of evaluations, executive reports, etc. It would have been interesting to study the types of evaluations and read some mock or real evaluation reports or mock journal entries listing information gathering processes, focus group meetings, etc. in each style. They used a few limited journal entry examples but something that really lays out the whole process would have been better. The book is quite technical, perhaps at the expense of overlooking the energy and passion that evaluators need for themselves and to bring out in their stakeholders. Our professor actually had to use an additional book (Action Research by Stringer) to add that component. At the price we paid this text should have also covered more of that perspective. This book is ridiculously expensive. Surely they could lower the prices a bit and still make a great profit. I think that students being hit with huge tuition costs are getting tired of these outrageous book prices. The authors really know their stuff and I learned a lot from the book.I don't begrudge them for making a profit for such a scholarly work but I'd love to know how they (the publishers)can justify such a cost for a book. All in all a good text especially covering the component parts of evaluations, types of evaluations, evolution of the science, and the ethical issues that evaluators face.

A very comprehensive approach to program evaluation. The reading level may not be suitable for some readers as it takes an experienced reader to navigate through the terminology. That being said, this edition does a great job of organizing the chapters (historical, content, and application analyses). A great tool for graduate students who are studying program evaluation or for those with interest in the field. Overall, I rate this volume received a B-.

If you want to read more from travel writings than Lonely Planet travel guides (which are excellent), start with American author Paul Theroux and then try his travel mentor, V.S. Naipaul. This book has Naipaul revisiting the home island of Trinidad. As an ethnic Indian, Naipaul can travel the Caribbean and Venezuela and get an honest perspective that perhaps a caucasian travel writer might not. That's a trite and somewhat insulting way to characterize his travel books, but I've bought five on that premise and been happy with every one. If you're not as well read on the classics as Naipaul is, open one of his books and try to keep up with his literary name dropping. Maybe I haven't read the European classics that he has, but it's enough to see a citation in one of his accounts of wanderings. This is one of his shorter books, pick it up for a travel-sized read on your own voyages.

It’s a marker on the map of time. It deepened my understanding of West Indian culture. I was pleasantly surprised by the many stories of the Jagan’s in Guyana.

Well written, covers subject completely.

I decided to read something by this author who was prolific and passed away very recently. After studying a list of his books, I picked this particular one which is non fiction. I am not sure I picked the best of what he had to offer and I am not particularly interested in the history of that part of the world. Perhaps I owe it to myself to read several other books of his but for the moment, I very little enthusiasm for it.

A classic but not an easy read - especially if your new to author

excellent

What can you say! Naipaul's books paint an interesting picture of countries in the Caribbean as per their heritage of slavery and racial harmony. I enjoyed this book and his viewpoint! Can't help but wonder how it would read this many years later, has progress been made?

A wonderful writer with a unique view of everything revisits his homeland. Very unusual. Read slowly, appreciate.

This book by Spence is full of great references to well-known and obscure Celtic myths. Covering Ireland, Scotland, Western Britain, and parts of Continental Europe, the Celts were large in scope, and this book covers a very large part of their beliefs. His study of comparative mythology is also done quite well, comparing traditions of the Norse, Celts, and Greeks, among others. I highly recommend this book to both beginners in the field, and those not new to the wonderful world of the Celtic peoples. He seems to be an expert in the field, but does not draw extravagant conclusions, as many other authors have done.

l really enjoyed this book on ancient Celtic occultism. lt's an intermediate book on difficulty and length, and shouldn't take more than a week or 2 to read. The author is clearly proud to be from this part of the world, as he states repeatedly throughout the book. After reading the material though, l can understand and relate to his sense of pride.Spence talks about mystery schools, folk magic creatures, myths, legends, rituals and supernatural abilities like shapeshifting and second sight. He stresses his belief that the ancient Celts and Druids were a mystically inclined people, more closely involved and indeed interwoven into the spiritual world than other global regions. Luckily there isn't a hamfisted, preachy, Christian bias overshadowing the whole thing, and the author maintains a mostly grounded and objective approach to his research and findings. The Magic Arts in Celtic Britain is a fun read, mixing history with lore and bringing a highly enjoyable cocktail to the table. Lewis Spence can get flashy with his wording, but he's easily followed for the most part. Even when dealing with morose topics, l find that he makes it lighthearted in a strange way. You could say l'm a fan.

This book has been so helpful in writing my Celtic fantasies. It’s packed cover to cover with fascinating information - I’ve read through it all twice, and STILL find lots that I hadn’t noticed before. It has a good index (essential for this sort of book) lots of useful references - it is that rare thing - a learned book, full of knowledge, yet highly readable. I can’t put it down!

Author Lewis Spence spends a great deal of time trying to explain to the reader that he is not the authority on this subject, however the depth of the passages in this book contradict his claim. The book offers readers a very detailed summary of various forms of the Magic Arts (Celtic spirituality, Arthurian Legend, Druids, etc...)....Rating of 4 stars only because there are just a small smattering of sketches/plates to accompany the text.I've read in various interviews with Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant that this book inspired him to write Stairway to Heaven!

A decent primer on druid magic with an interesting bibliography and numerous anecdotes.

The font is so packed together I would need a magnifying glass to read it. A million words per page. Just too difficult to read and poorly laid out. No excuse for that in this day and age. I returned it.

This book was originally published in 1945. I personally love the style of writing that was common in Britain pre-WWII--some modern readers might find it a bit wordy or dense but it's so witty and cheeky while still being to-the-point. (It's worth remembering the original date when you run across a regrettable use of the "N-word" when the author quotes what must be an old American expression.) Spence was an erudite folklorist who wrote on the folk literature of various cultures, and he brings that expertise, alongside his own identity as a Scot, to the study of Celtic lore.In some places Spence's interpretations are, by 21st century standards, a little outdated (e.g., the theory that all cultures develop through certain stages, referring to certain peoples as primitive or savage, what he endearingly calls the "predisposition of the Celtic race to the arcane and mysterious," and in particular his conclusion--in spite of evidence to the contrary--that women weren't really druids but only assistants). And of course he didn't have the benefit of all the archaeological discoveries that have happened in the last 70 years. But for the most part he treats the material with respect and precision and one can overlook the dated stuff and still find plenty of useful information. There are extensive footnotes with bibliographical references for those who wish to do further research or check out the primary sources Spence refers to. He also discusses other experts' theories on the topics he adresses. And actually there is a benefit to a Celtic sourcebook of this age, and that is that it predates the wishful thinking that dominates a lot of popular literature about "Celts," especially in neopagan circles. Spence does make reference to Frazer's Golden Bough, which has now been criticized as full of inaccuracies, but there's no Robert-Graves-White-Goddess nonsense. Some of Spence's interpretations are very intriguing and really deserve further study, for example, his speculation that the druids were the priests of a sect devoted to the concept of divine kingship, as opposed to religious professionals for the people as a whole. Although we will probably never be able to confirm or deny this, it does fit with the way druids are represented in the early medieval Irish literature. He also points out something that is obvious in retrospect and yet I admit I never noticed it, and that is that in comparison with Norse mythological literature, the Irish and Welsh stories seem to be much more philosophical, if not even mystical, in their orientation. In short I think this is a necessary piece for the library of anyone interested in Celtic (particularly Irish, Welsh, and Scottish) history, archaeology, literature, folklore, and mythology/religion.

This is an interesting find in reading for the type of interests I have. GREAT SERVICE! Great copy! Happy to GET THIS BOOK!
