Several years ago I began feeling a whole host of symptoms, fatigue, extreme muscle pain, numbness, extreme short term memory loss etc. Thought it was menopause. I got checked by my doc and everything came out normal except I had low B12 (250), Vitamin D (22) and Zinc was 60. Even at 250 I had debilitating symptoms. So I began to supplement with sublingual B12 (methylcobalamin). With 2 days I began to feel better, but what was really worrisome was being wired to the point of being completely unable to sleep with heart palpitations that felt like my heart would jump out of my chest. I told my doc and she had no answers, she just told me to "keep trying" and offered injections which I rejected due to fear of the insomnia. I lowered my b12 dose to just 25-50mcg/day, but STILL had wired symptoms, I stopped the B12 completely and over the next 2 years I upped my Vitamin D and Zinc but still didn’t feel significantly better.Long story short through extensive research reading online B12 forums I discovered some people become hypokalemic (low potassium) after supplementing with any form of B12 due to the B12 building DNA, building new cells (RBCs and other blood cells) These "new" cells will take up the Potassium and internalize it intracellularly (Potassium is mainly intracellular) and therefore your extracellular Potassium will diminish as a result. So now after I take my morning B12 sublingual if I start to get heart palpitations, feel the jitters coming on, I drink a can of low sodium V8 juice which has 1100mg potassium and within an hour I'm calm, relaxed and back to just feeling good, and the BEST PART...I sleep so damn good now, like I did in my teens, I can multi-task like never before and I’m no longer planning 2 level cervical disc fusion surgery because my neck/back pain is almost completely gone.I realize most people don't get this kind of weird side effect from B12, but if you are like me load up on potassium: coconut water, V8, bananas or a potassium supplement.

This book saved my life & my sanity. It brought knowledge and clarity to what I thought were disparate symptoms and has begun bringing over 3+ years of suffering and constant worry to an end. Like so many of the case studies presented in this book, I was misdiagnosed or dismissed by doctors and specialists for years.Armed with the information in this book, I sought out a new GP and requested the author's recommended tests. I am so glad I was forewarned that many in the medical community may oppose testing because my requests were initially met with skepticism. Knowing this could happen, I was prepared to stand my ground & insist the tests were ordered. My B12 came back at a critically low level and my homocysteine and methylmalonic acid were elevated. These 3 results confirm a B12 deficiency. The book is extremely helpful at explaining the importance and special considerations of each of these tests. After that, my GP started taking me seriously however she had a knowledge deficit as to how to treat it or what to do next. Once again, I was so grateful for this book. I was able to show my doctor case studies and treatment plans & have been taking SC injections of B12 and am feeling so much better.B12 is essential to the formation of healthy red blood cells and necessary for DNA replication. The symptoms of a B12 deficiency can manifest in any or all bodily systems. As the author points out, it is often mistaken for other illnesses & only the tests listed above can rule it out. But you will need this book to understand what your test results mean and for advice on what to do next. There is so much misinformation out there about B12 deficiency, most doctors and many hospitals do not use the most up-to-date information or sufficient B12 test ranges so if you are looking for honest, well explained answers from medical professionals, please buy this book! It just might save you, or a loved one, too.

I've had chronic fatigue for around 25 years and frequent migraines for a bit longer. I've been down just about every road I could find for answers, first taking lots of supplements (which were certainly helpful to one degree or another) then checking out various causes such as mercury poisoning (symptoms of fatigue started around the same time I had a bunch of old fillings with new "silver" ones in the late 1980s), Lyme Disease, anyway, long list.To make a very long story much shorter -- a few weeks ago, probably as a result of some purchase or search I had made, Amazon suggested this book to me. I had already started taking B-12 after reading about the Dr. Martin Pall protocol for CFS which uses high dose hydroxocobalamin B-12 among many other supplements. After just a few days on sublingual hydroxo B-12 (Perque Activated B-12) -- in less than one week -- my migraines just stopped cold (had been getting one or two per week, off and on, for years, and frequency was increasing over time). For me, the hydroxo form seems to be more effective than the methyl form of B-12 (I had been taking sublingual methyl B-12 1000 mcg for years and my serum levels were quite elevated). In large part with the help of this book, I have come to realize that I've probably had a B-12 deficiency most of my life (and I'd say further, in retrospect, that B-12 deficiency probably runs in my mother's side of our family). And perhaps what "put me over the edge" in the late 80s was the increased mercury exposure from filling replacement (mercury binds B-12).In any case, during my entire 25 year odyssey with CFS, not one health professional ever suggested that B-12 could be my primary problem (even though I had some blood test indicators they should have caught). Without books like this it might be very difficult for many people to get to the bottom of the cause of their symptoms and thus have to continue being treated by doctors using drugs to suppress symptoms (or, like me, spending massive amounts of money on supplements that couldn't really solve the problem).Update (12-30-11): Since writing this review almost one year ago, I've made another discovery that's even more basic than the B-12 deficiency. After all, one wonders why there's a deficiency in the first place (since I've been taking at least 1000 mcg sublingual B-12 daily for years). I recently discovered that I have genetic gluten sensitivity (similar to celiac disease). Gluten sensitivity can lead to a long list of problems including gut damage which compromises absorption of nutrients, and I found out that gluten sensitivity runs in my family. Going gluten free (absolutely no wheat, rye, or barley - for me, no grains at all, actually) has made a huge difference. Though I had improved my migraine problem with B-12, they're all but eliminated after going gluten free (though I can still give myself a migraine if I eat a few foods I just don't tolerate). Depression is mostly gone, as is chronic insomnia, and my energy level is much better - almost "normal." Gluten is a big issue for many people, and few know about it. And by the way, I am now using methyl B-12 (5000 mcg x 2 daily) instead of the hydroxo form.

From the Back Cover

NMR DATA PROCESSING Jeffrey C. Hoch and Alan S. Stern Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful nondestructive technique for exploring the structure of matter. In recent years, NMR instrumentation has become increasingly sophisticated, and the software used to acquire and process NMR data continues to expand in scope and complexity. This software has always been difficult to understand, and, until now, it seemed likely to remain that way. NMR Data Processing examines and explains the techniques used to process, present, and analyze NMR data. It provides a complete account of the fundamentals of spectrum analysis and establishes a framework for applying those fundamentals to real NMR data. It also details, in clear and concise language, the basic principles underlying the complex software needed to analyze the data. Two chapters are devoted to the fundamentals and applications of discrete Fourier transform (DFT) in NMR, which was crucial to the development of modern NMR spectroscopy. A large part of the book focuses on increasingly important non-DFT methods, which obtain higher sensitivity and resolution. Other topics covered include: * Data formats * Processing for multidimensional experiments * Parametric modeling of NMR signals * Standard techniques-apodization, zero-filling, the Hilbert transform * Artifacts-aliasing, leakage, solvent signals * Advanced processing techniques-LP, MaxEnt, Bayesian analysis Jeffrey C. Hoch and Alan S. Stern conclude their in-depth look at this rapidly growing field by exploring methods for analyzing processed data, including visualization, quantification, and error analysis. Readers are provided with a solid foundation for developing new methods of their own. NMR Data Processing is an important tool for students learning basic principles for the first time, technicians troubleshooting data processing problems, and professional researchers developing new techniques. It will help all NMR users acquire a true grasp of the methods behind the process, avoid the pitfalls of misapplication and misinterpretation, and exploit the full power of NMR software.

Starting with the essentials of Fourier Transform theory, this great book takes you through an enjoyable tour of modern methods of spectral analysis in NMR, highlighting the most relevant techniques with clarity in what could otherwise become a confusing array of acronyms. The book does not hesitate to invoke mathematical formulas where necessary to explain the function of the methods, but does so in the gentle style that makes the classic Numerical Recipes books so pleasant to read. Hoch and Stern have had ample experience in the field of modern spectrum analysis. Although the authors try to assist the newbie in the selection of appropriate techniques, a lot of questions still remain as to which is the optimal method for a particular problem, and a conclusion to be drawn from this book, as from the literature in general, is that some experimentation with numerical techniques is often required before the "best" method is hit upon. Unfortunately the book has aged and is ready for a second edition as new concepts such as GFT make their way into the mainstream.
