Review

"One of the most interesting books I've ever read is a book by Peter Kingsley called In the Dark Places of Wisdom. Wisdom wasn't just a matter of books. It was about going into the unconscious and minding the treasures of the unconscious through vision, dream, trance, and intuition; getting in touch with reality from within. And those are the kinds of secrets that we have lost in our whole western world."--Margaret Starbird, author of The Woman with the Alabaster Jar and The Feminine Face of Christianity"This remarkable book speaks with equal power to the scholar and the seeker alike. To absorb what it says is to encounter a completely new vision of the ancient world that lies at the root of our own civilization. Right there, at our own feet, lies a forgotten tradition that has the power to transform all our views about our culture and our life."--Jacob Needleman, author of Lost Christianity and The Heart of Philosophy"With its surprisingly fresh and original approach, In the Dark Places of Wisdom includes a wealth of suggestions and observations hardly ever made before... The philosophical and mystical roots of Western civilization start to appear in a completely new light."--Walter Burkert, author of Greek Religion and Ancient Mystery Cults"This beautiful book is a transmission of life and wisdom."--El Mundo (Madrid, Spain)"Peter Kingsley is a master excavator of lost and hidden meanings. He accomplishes nothing less than giving us a new pair of eyes by which to see the true philosophical and spiritual depth of the ancient world upon which our own civilization is built. In the beautiful and penetrating language of an accomplished storyteller, he shows the absolute relevance of history and wisdom to our own present life."--Georg Feuerstein, author of The Yoga Tradition and Tantra, the Path of Ecstasy"Quite simply a masterpiece: a work of immaculate, luminous scholarship which recovers for Western civilization the treasures of wisdom discarded by Plato over 2000 years ago. No-one could fail to respond to this story or be moved by the poetic prose which takes us 'as far as longing can reach' and opens a door into depths which have never been recognized, let alone explored by our culture."--Anne Baring, co-author of The Myth of the Goddess and The Mystic Vision"Compelling, fascinating, hard to put down. Told in a direct, lucid style the story reads like an intriguing detective novel. Each page reveals new depths of thought -- revelations that can serve us today if we are to survive the contemporary illusions of reality that are poisoning our souls."--Rudolfo Anaya, author of Bless Me, Ultima and Tortuga"This gives me great hope, the dawning of insight. It is a very important book that at last brings the past to life and true relevance again -- a pioneering effort in recovering the origins of our humanity and uncovering the source from which each of us springs."--David Appelbaum, editor of Parabola

Kingsley has gone into great depth to explore the origins of healing and how we lost the truth of who we are and have always been. We are more powerful and resilient than we have been led to believe and this book uncovers what has caused us to forget.

Expounding upon the title;...true knowledge lies. Thoroughly enjoyed and devoured this book. Academia at its finest, for those looking to dig below the surface of mundane knowledge.

Through In The Dark Places of Wisdom, Peter Kingsley covers the roots of the Western system of thought as revealed through the lives of Plato, Pythagoras and Parmeneides. Essentially, the Phoenicians brought eastern spiritual traditions with them when they fled the Persians. Through the methods of `incubation', simply sitting quietly, these Greeks developed the most revelatory discoveries that we accredit to them.In our current rational systems we would instantly discredit anyone bringing `laws from the gods delivered by dreams' but not so in Greek society. The rational faculties we have celebrated in those we attributed early rationality to are heavily misplaced, shaking the foundations of our own systems.Perhaps the most significant failure of current humanity is the inability to experience incubation in our daily lives due to strict schedules. This quiet meditation of the heart is a core aspect of all mystical schools and a severe afterthought in the blueprint for modern existence. Truthfully, philosophy isn't arguing about thoughts or existence, its is the love of wisdom. Mysticism has been relegated to the fringes of culture and the more it gravitates outward, the more we push it away because we have to fill the void with some new substitution. I won't list those substitutions because you know what they are. The ways we avoid the `path to the underworld' undertaken by Parmeneides are numerous. Only by facing the depths of the human existence do we become human. By avoiding the dark side we come to fear it, it manifests as latent dissatisfaction, depression and terror.Sadly, many of us will "come to the point of our death and find ourselves still wanting the thousand substitutes we aren't able to have". Kingsley posits, "...because there's no knowledge left any more of how to find access to what's beyond our waking consciousness, we have to take anesthetics and drugs. And because there's no longer any understanding of powers greater than ourselves we're denied any meaning to our suffering. So we suffer as liabilities, die as statistics." If that sounds familiar it is because he describes the way we observe the world around us. The promise of reviving methods of subconscious exploration like incubation has significant advantages."Life for us has become an endless affair of trying to improve ourselves, achieving more and doing more, learning more, always needing to know more things. The process of learning and being taught has simply become a matter of being fed facts and information, receiving what we didn't have before, always being given something different from ourselves. That's what whatever we learn never touches us deeply enough; why we sense this the more we rush around trying to find substitutions for the void we feel inside. Everything pushes us outside ourselves, further away from the simplicity of our humanity. "Where does the knowledge for growth lie? Inside ourselves: "We already have everything we need. We just have to be shown what we have. This is why the greatest teachers are often utter nobodies. In some circumstances they might introduce you to a new system of knowledge or change your lifestyle - and yet that's not what their teaching is basically about. It's just a trick to keep your mind focused while the real work is being done somewhere else... we think that being practical means keeping busy, getting on with our lives, rushing from one distraction to another finding more and more substitutes for what we dimly sense."As Parmeneides said, `human beings wander along, knowing nothing'. What Kingsley effectively argues is that Parmeneides was referring to us. What I took from this book is that the reality before us must be valued for what it is, even if it undermines some of the notions we have about the past and our most intimate nature.

Because people see me reading a lot, they always ask "What are you reading now?". I show them this book cover and they are immediately curious. Their next question is "What's it about?" I tell them "The Truth". In the Dark Places of Wisdom, the author takes you on a journey and keeps your curiosity going from the book cover to the very end. A fascinating read that won't leave you disappointed.

One of the best books I have read in a long time. Reminder of something so important and yet forgotten.

If you have the mystical bent this is a great work to read. Peter Kingley really knows what he is talking about.

I first read Kingsley's books almost 5 years ago. It was life-changing. Every time I re-read In the Dark Places of Wisdom, in particular, I'm taken back to that electric excitement, that freshness and wonder of tremendous discovery. It's true, what the other reviewers say, this book reads like a mystery novel, a whodunit. Awe and urgency come through on every page.In the Dark Places of Wisdom is not an easy read, but not for the reasons you might expect. I think it's because we, as a culture, are drowning in our own sensationalism. If you turn on the TV for half an hour, you'll see what's totally trivial and inane presented as momentous and earth-shattering. When we do finally encounter a real discovery, it can be extremely hard to accept. We're jaded. But that doesn't mean that great discoveries don't exist anymore. Kingsley's research is meticulous and impeccable. If you care to look, it will become harder and harder to escape his conclusions. And then, when you wrap your mind around what's in this book and see the implications, you'll find that it's anything but a light read. You will probably find it, as I did, both profoundly unnerving and utterly thrilling. It's such a surreal experience to discover that everything you've always taken for granted about your civilization is wrong. And it's nothing short of magical to find out that the truth is more beautiful, more alive, than you ever could have hoped or imagined. It's like seeing life for the first time. It's like walking into another world. Read this book. Your heart will thank you.

I worked for the Captain Cook Inn and desired to read about how it came to be named. This book took me on adventures totally imaginable. It will open your eyes to the trials these Seaman experienced, their hardships, ship disciplines and the total havoc reeked by scurvy. I highly recommend this well written book.

There is no doubt that this is the definitive biography of the renowned Captain Cook. For no other reason, persons with an interest in the greatest navigator of all time should read this work. While few details of his life outside of his three major expeditions have been retained, this book brings to life the Captain that sailed the world on his three voyages, including his personality, his foibles, his leadership, and his intellect. He was indeed a man with many admirable qualities. So why only three stars? While the book is well researched and well organized, it is not well written. Far too often, a jumble of words is presented as a substitute for a sentence. If Beaglehole could write clearly, this would certainly be a 5 star work. On the other hand, sadly enough, a clear writing style has not always been the hallmark of a professional historian.

I base my three star review from the point of view of a reader not a historian. I chose this book because I enjoyed "Farther Than Any Man" by Martin Dugard. "The Life of Captain James Cook" has so much menutiae, that, for me, it lost all thrill and my interest. If Beaglehole had the ability of Stephan Ambrose to condense Lewis and Clark's journals, which I tried to read, into "Undaunted Courage", which I have read twice, this would probably be a wonderful read.

I've not had time to read it yes, but look forward to doing so. A guide on a recent cruise we took to Tasmania and New Zealand highly recommended that I buy it.Frances VandervoortChicago

This is a tome which occassionally tells you just a little more than you really want to know about the three great voyages to the Pacific, but anyone seriously interested in the western penetration into the Pacific will want to read this book. It is also an articulate and formidable defense of Cook's character, seamanship, and wisdom. While Cook is not quite so venerable now in a time of great sensitivity to the depradations western invasion inflicted on indiginous people, this book presents us with an undoubtedly great man interested not in conquest but in geography, exploration, discovery, science, anthropology and peaceful relations between cultures. The aftermath was a tragedy, (see Alan Moorehead's The Fatal Impact) but Cook was simply too high-minded and short-sighted to forsee what would come after. Cook was for better and worse a man of his time--and it was an age of enlightenment--an exemplar of the period of science, exploration and adventure. He was of course a cold fish and hard to cosy to, but there is much to admire in this brilliant portrait of the man and his age.

New Zealand historian J. C. Beaglehole was perhaps the 20th century's foremost authority on European exploration in the Pacific. The main results of his long and distinguished career were "Exploration of the Pacific" and "Life of Captain James Cook". In preparation for writing the Life, he produced the definitive modern editions of the Journals of Captain Cook (4 volumes) and the Endeavour Journals of Jospeh Banks (2 volumes). An understanding of Cook and the voyages must begin with Beaglehole.

J.C. Beaglehole has brought to life in this book, not only the greatest seaman and navigator ever, but a man that should be revered as a perfect showcase of human quality. The book is very long and detailed, but provides vast information of Captain James Cook and his voyages that added to our knowledge of geography, oceanography, biology, astronomy, navigation, health, and humanity. I recomend everyone old and young, of every ethnic background to read this book. In the end, the reader sees that it wasn't his accomplisments that made him famous, but his awesome moral beliefs of modesty, chastity, temperence, faithfulness, steadfastness, truth, honesty, loyalty, discilpline, and passion that define the very finest example of how to live as a human being.

This is just one of the best books I ever read. Though concentrated on Cook's greatest achievements it gives enough background information to know him before he leaves for the serie of worldvoyages that made him famous..... and you meet the other men that accompanied him. Difficult to master as biography, diserves a renewed hardcover edition.

About the Author

As a small boy in the early 1980s nothing seemed more exciting to Keiron Pim than a visit to London’s renowned Natural History Museum, where he would gaze up at the Diplodocus skeleton and later depart clutching some little dinosaur-related memento: an eraser shaped like Stegosaurus, a lurid poster of a Jurassic scene, or a book crammed with dino-facts. It would have blown his four-year-old mind to know that thirty years later a book on dinosaurs would be his first publication. Keiron, married with three young daughters, is a writer and journalist now based in Norfolk, England.

This is a tough book to review, mostly because it's hard to say exactly who the intended audience is (was). Superficially it looks like many other "dinosaur books" that middle school students would enjoy but when one sits down and actually goes through it, studying the layout, reading the narrative, studying the diagrams, it seems to be written for a much more sophisticated audience. It's true, that for experts in this field, there might not be much new, but I don't think that was the purpose. This is a field guide as much as anything else.Other reviewers were disappointed in the number of "gray silhouettes" and the relative paucity of artistic renderings in color. Considering how little we actually know about dinosaur skin the authors' decision to go with what they did is probably appropriate. In fact, there is more color in the book than some reviewers apparently seem to realize. But if you are buying the book thinking that it will look like the cover, you will be sorely disappointed. This book is not the end-all and be-all of books on dinosaurs but it brings together in one book all (?) the dinosaurs that have been discovered and named. It brings me up to date. Now when a new dinosaur is discovered or named, I can update this field guide with a 3 x 5-inch index card in the right location.

First and foremost, this book provides one of the most accessible surveys of contemporary knowledge about dinosaurs available today. Despite a primary focus on dinosaurs, the book includes also a small (yet healthy) amount of information about the other animals that shared the Earth with them during the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods. Pim even makes sure to include historical information about important paleontologists and how they influenced the field. Each dinosaur covered is chronologically organized by the geologic period that best defines it. This gives the reader the advantage of easily constructing a mental profile of the herbivore, carnivore, and omnivore dinosaur species that exploited various parts of the same environment. Furthermore, the text for some animals makes it a point to refer to related species covered earlier in the text, which is especially useful for understanding species that span multiple geological periods. The text is not overly technical, and the illustrations are well done. While some of the species are disappointingly rendered only as silhouettes, I sincerely believe that the overall quality of artwork somewhat makes up for it.Beyond the quality of the text, the next most important issue to consider when purchasing this book is the format. While I own the Kindle version, I have spent some time with the print version. For adults, I think either version of the text works well. The Kindle version is convenient (which works better for me), but the illustrations still look better in print. With that said, and since the non-technical nature of the text makes this work rather accessible, younger readers may like the print version best. Due to it's lexile level, this is not a text that I would give a child under the age of 12 unless you intend to read the book together. While the book has great illustrations, it is not a picture book by any stretch of the imagination.Overall, this is a great choice for anyone who wishes to get current with the state of paleontology and the study of dinosaurs. It's not technical, and it's not exhaustive, but I think most lay readers will find it just right for an introduction.

Good treatment of a topic that has been hashed over a lot. It was nice to have the time frames of the different dino eras put into perspective. It didn't bother me (as it seemed to have bothered some other reviewers) that some dinos had only outlines for representation. Often all that is known about a particular dino is from an incomplete collection of bones, so we can only surmise what the dino actually looked like, thus the outline illustration. There are good illustrations for the dinos whose physiology is known (some are truly scary!). Nice commentaries on the places of discovery, as well with time lines in an easy to read chart format.I would recommend this book to someone who has an interest in dinos, maybe as a hobby. If you have wondered about the dinos and their world together and as separate species, I think this is the book for you. If you want something a little more scientific, then you might have to look elsewhere.

Includes a good amount of information, but only drawings lacking detail. The download version is inexpensive, and now I know why. Compared to other dinosaur books this book is about average, while the digital version contains little detail and is boring to read. There are much better books on dinosaurs on the market, and many of them are less expensive. Try Dougal Dixon's book if you want a visual feast. It doesn't include as much information, but the drawings and maps are well worth it.

This book is amazing!! it has so much awesome information that is presented in a reader friendly way. The book covers over 300 dinosaurs, as well as other well-known creatures that lived with the dinosaurs. This book also covers recent innovations within paleontology itself. The information is very up to date. You could get almost as much entertainment looking at the art as you would reading; the art is spectacular! I am a huge dinosaur and paleontologist enthusiast, and I cannot say enough good things about this book. I bought the paperback copy, and I was very satisfied, I can only imagine how great the hardback would look.

It works as a dinosaur reference, but if you are looking for something a little more in depth, you might consider looking elsewhere. Perhaps you might consider Robert T. Bakker's Dinosaur Heresies or Dinosaur Odyssey. The weren't as many colored pictures as I would have liked, but those that were in the book more than made up for this deficiency. All in all, this is a pretty solid book on those amazing creatures called dinosaurs.

Book Description

When Heaven Invades Earth is a powerful statement and testimony on the Kingdom of God. Theologically sound, well supported, and extremely well argued, this message provides a carefully constructed biblical foundation for the average Christian to live and walk in the miraculous, supernatural power of God. Not only is the supernatural possible, it is also our commission. The Great Commission that Christ gave to the Church challenges us and makes us responsible to rise up to this supreme supernatural calling. I attended a weekend conference of Mr Johnson's many years ago and he seemed very sincere and was quite convincing. I purchased a number of his books and tapes. However, I have since come to the conclusion that his theology is well meaning trash. Plenty of feel-good stuff, but silly- I mean, gold dust ? feathers? Truly nonsense ...where is the Holy Spirit confrontation of sin and exhortation to a more sanctified life? Oh that wouldn't be as easy and popular, now, would it?If I see gold dust and feathers in my home or church , I will surely know Satan is afoot. This is pure garbage.

One of the most quotable books I have ever read.In this landmark book Bill Johnson pleads his case that christianity is supernatural from beginning to end and that a gospel that isn't accompanied by signs and wonders, should be suspicious from the outset. The lives of christians should be filled with signs and wonders, because the live of our Master was filled with it and He commanded his followers to do what He did!The ministry of Jesus was characterized most by His miracles and He placed so much weight on this aspect that He stated "If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me;" (John 10:37). How different the world would be today if the church would say what Jesus is saying here. "If you don't see us performing signs and miracles, don't believe what we are saying!"The book is very challenging and will probably make some believers feel very uncomfortable. For example the emphasis that Bill places on the word 'is' in 1 John 4:17 ("because as He *IS*, so are we in this world.") has challenged me a lot and thinking about how much I yet have to understand of what Jesus redemptive work has made me.It also shows how much in church can just be 'religion' (form without power) and can turn many once-powerful works of God into dead museums, no matter how much lights and funky music there is.I have some reservations as to whether I would recommend this book to a new believer, because I still believe that having a solid foundation in Scripture is paramount and we should be taking that as a guideline above manifestations like gold dust, feathers and glory clouds. But still, you have to wonder if you only know scripture, but never experience anything miraculous, how much you get the core and purpose of scripture: a living, breathing relationship with God Himself and Him manifesting His presence through you.A book that ihmo can be considered a true modern day classic that every christian should read.

An amazing book, thought provoking and creates a new perspective of a number of belief systems that we have come to call normal. There is a new understanding of the way God works; I would recommend this book for all who are tired of the current status quo and are ready for revival. This books also helps to explain some of the behavior we see in those who are adamant that revival is not upon us as God has not shown them anything on that matter yet!

Growing up in a Christian church and home that did not often speak of miracles and healings the way that this book does, I thought it was really great insight and perspective of how we as humans so often limit God by telling him what he can't or will not do. This book has challenged some of the ways I interpret the Bible and think of God, which has been awesome for my spiritual growth. You don't have to buy into everything that's in a book, but if you are looking for a different perspective on God and his Kingdom, I highly recommend this book.

It is a must read... Bill explains how Gods kingdom must be on earth as it is in Heaven.... I feel it is an amazing book that stirs your heart and mind to pursue heaven's will to be done here on earth and in families and churches, etc... If your eyes read this and your heart is not moved, to pursue Heaven on earth, then the eyes your understanding need a course correction.... I think it's amazing.

Bill Johnson is right on! This book is much needed for every born-again believer.Powerful and inspired book! A must read for those of us who have been in wonderful loving churches but, without the person off the Holy Spirit having the freedom to move.I have been sensing God leading me into a fuller understanding of the power of the person, the gift, the Holy Spirit. Years ago God told me that He didn't save me to be a pew warmer that He had a plan for my life. I have been seeking more of an understanding of the power of the Spirit of God and what role I am to play in His plan ever since. This book has answered so many questions I had and has given an even more hunger for the presence and the fullness of His Spirit.WAKE UP Church! Get busy doing our Father' business, for the Master will return and find you looking religious but lacking the power thereof.

Best book I have read in years. It wasnt a quick read, I kept stopping and going back and reading again. Awesome for anyone who who seeks to be as He is now. This book excited me and got my desire to be a doer of the Word on fire again

This book is life-changing. You can tell that I book I've read is really good by the amount of highlights and notes in the margin; this book is so inspirational that all the pages are almost fully yellow. Also, usually after reading a very good book, I go through it and rewrite in a notebook, everything I've highlighted just to deepen it in my spirit. I've done that with this book. When I read it, I wept, I prayed, I spoke in tongues, I did all that because the words from the pages ministered to me. This book took me beyond the norm. It starts by challenging all believers to live always expecting the supernatural. I was challenged and I have not been the same since reading this book.

Great read! Can't wait to start my research for publishers!

There's a lot of good information about the self-publishing world. Alan provides the website for each publisher recommended as well as an overview of their services. He also indicates whether a publisher has a phone number authors can use to contact them or not. There are quite a number of names that a simple research for publishers may not have uncovered. It should be noted that while Alan makes mention of a number of publishers he did not personally test out all of them. Therefore an author who was planning to self-publish would still need to do their own research. A good way to do that would be to start with this book as a reference point. Thanks to NetGalley who provided a free copy of this book for my honest review.

“How to Self Publish Inexpensive Books and Ebooks” is a one-stop resource for getting your work out into the world. It offers concise step-by-step instructions on editing, layout, cover design, choices for printers and publishers, and marketing strategies and associated fees. Highly recommended! Thanks to BooksGoSocial and NetGalley for the review copy. Opinions are mine.#HowToSelfPublishInexpensiveBooksAndEbooks:u.s.edition #NetGalley

The fact that I hadn’t read it

Many questions on where to begin and how to get started are answered in chronological order.Helpful guidance is provided along the way to assist anyone considering publishing their first novel, be it a paperback or ebook. Many valuable resources had been compiled and were listed to include: market strategies, price schedules and contact information. Most importantly, the author helps remove the mystique about the world of publishing that's often intimidating to debut authors.I would recommend this book to any aspiring writer who has given serious consideration to publishing their first piece of literature. It's a good place to start.I offer my gratitude to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for this digital edition in exchange for an unbiased review.

This is a classic SF futuristic warfare novel that was (may be still) on the reading list at the USAF Command and Staff College where it first got my attention. Written in or around 1959, Heinlein's views on duty, honor, selfless service, dignity, combat unit cohesiveness, future infantry tactics and weaponry, society, women in combat, politics, and even parenting are magnificently woven into a fast read novel written at the high school level (at least the 1959 high school level). A must read for any junior officer or NCO. Great for a military professional development discussion or class. Heinlein was a prolific SF writer. And, I have read a number of his books. But, Starship Troopers is by far the best. If you saw the movie.... I provide you my regrets, although it had a number of budding stars. About the only thing the novel and the movie share besides title is that the protagonist is named Johnnie and the antagonists are bugs.

I first read this book years ago as a child, and in many ways it shaped my entire world view; it quite literally changed my life.I recently retired after 27 years of Naval service, and as silly as it may seem to some, this book was the foundation of my success; in military service, in the lives of countless young Sailors, and in my new role as a civilian. It shaped the character of who I was as a leader of men and women at war.Heinlein may have authored "better" books (according to the critics) but having read virtually all of them, none of the others ever quite so captured the essence of what it means to be both in military service and what those of us fortunate enough to have served all know in our hearts: the true value and moral responsibility of citizenship.

Best WAR story ever written, past, present or future. It is NOT what you saw in the movie, it is SOOOOO much better!!! Heinlein lays out his vision for inter-galactic warfare, but it is really a book about how a boy becomes a man and a person becomes a worthy citizen. Accused by the Hippies of its era for being "Too Fascist" this libertarian fantasy portrays a future where society really is a liberal-globalist paradise run on a capitalist economy, but with the right to vote limited to those who volunteer for military service. It is a future society with total freedom and total responsibility. All wars are in outer space where human colonies run into hostile societies, especially the "Bugs." We get to follow Johnny Rico, a very typical recent high school graduate, as he goes through basic training and enters combat in a wild tech-warrior mech-suit (first imagined in this book) as a member of the Mobile Infantry. if you like HALO, this is where the game world and tech came from. But, it is really a story about a new a better society and how to find meaning for your life through service to humanity. The best scenes are short, but all take place in a classroom, where "Moral Ethics and History" are taught by a veteran with a missing arm. So, ignore the movie, ignore the controversy; just buy this space adventure and ponder why we don't live in Heinlein's perfect society . . . . yet!!"Do you apes want to live forever!!"

Can't believe I waited this long to read it. I have been a Sci-Fi fan for many years. My die-hard friends always recommended "Starship Troopers" and the Forever War as two classics that all Sci-Fi fans have to have read.Well.... I saw the abysmal movie years ago so was not interested. What a dolt. Robert Heinlein's book is, I now agree, a must read classic for all Sci-Fi fans. I can now see the influence he had with current writers of the genre. Between him and Asimov their influence is seen everywhere. Really glad I finally read it. Not as much action as I had hoped for but the other areas where he explores human nature, government and society and an individuals role in all of that was enjoyable and well worth the read. You have to answer those same questions for yourself as you read Rico's experiences and journey from late teen into adulthood.

Citizenship based on merit, not just because you are alive. Citizenship means the assumption of responsibility, greater than the non citizen. Citizens are self starters and self directed. This is somewhat obscure as the story focuses on the soldier who follows orders, but it is a society that decides what needs to be done and the citizen volunteers to reach that goal. There is a movie which is in it's own way more interesting, but largely misses out on the political questions, like they are entirely different stories, as I am not interested in politics I was not expecting the point of view of the book. I like the politics of volunteering to be a citizen, citizenship is something chosen, and that choice is not to get a welfare check. Welfare is just money but marriage is a complex of traditions and customs that shapes your life. Citizenship is a choice to shape your life. I would have liked to see this idea for a baker or plumber. I like science fiction because it explores ideas, this is not the usual battle book, but the working out of a unique conception of the partnership of public/personal. The concept of equality is thrown in the trashcan, and the author tries to put something different in it's place.

Star Ship Troopers was written in 1959 well into the cold war world. I was a high school junior when I read it and was enamored by the war story in it. Several years later, during an especially unpleasant House Unamerican Activities, the science fiction community railed against the content of the book. The book's theory was that a fascist state would function better when humanity was endangered by foreign powers than perhaps some other form of polity. The author took significant criticism and, it is even said that subsequent writers wrote stories to show the opposite was true. The work is well thought out, well written and a fascinating story for either those interested ;in Space Opera or those interested in "what if" politics. I've learned that it is on the list of books for the major military academies. A tribute to a wonderful, thoughtful author and a necessity reading for most everyone interested in the history of the time in which it was written.
