I wish I would have had this book to go to when I first started my practice. An AMAZING read that I will recommend to every witch (or any person that practices witchcraft). It was inspiring, grounded, so well-rounded and balanced-- and packed with information valuable for someone at any point in their witchy evolution. I love Laura's style of writing; down-to-earth, snarky and also so passionate/poetic. She packs a punch!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

The back cover says it all, as do the editorial reviews! This book fills one with a sense of confidence. I wish something like this was there 5 years ago, it truly gets to the heart on several matters. I just can't properly describe how this book makes me feel.

As I continue to explore shifting my focus, expanding my practice, I read the delightful book Weave the Liminal by Laura Zakroff. I've always found liminal spaces to be wonderful gateways to magic and the otherworld. I was curious to read what someone who called their path "Modern Traditional Witchcraft" might have to say about liminal work.Before we dive into the meat of the book, I do want to praise the artwork on the cover and for each chapter. It really managed to capture the essence of the book and added a real magical flair to the pages!This book is intended for any witchcraft practitioner who is looking to forge their own path. New practitioners will find a lot of wonderful advice and inspiration that will save readers countless hours trying to figure out on their own. Questions about working with Deity, labels, and the history of witchcraft are presented in easy to digest segments. A newbie book that finally reflects what magic and witchcraft looks like in today's world. I've not yet read a book that so clearly empowers readers to do their own thing while still subtly providing the foundation and answers that newbies desire.The author writes with expertise and good humor. I felt like I was talking to an older sister who "got it" but also knew a few things more than I do. While I don't consider myself to be a beginner at this point, I can see this tone being incredibly helpful for a beginner in paganism or witchcraft.What I loved reading about was the author's take on Deity and the practicalities of being a witch in today's world. Readers really get to dive into the fascinating world of liminal work in the Deity chapter. The conversation around how one might differentiate between spirits, gods, ghosts, ect. was enlightening. The tidbits concerning navigating our modern world as a witch or pagan was just what our community needed. The author finds avenues for the traditional roles of healer, priestess, seer to be integrated in our mundane lives in 2019. These chapters are exactly what I look for when reading a book that isn't directly related to my own path as a Druid. Informative, inspiring, and providing just enough of shift that I can look at my own path with fresh eyes.Readers who are new to witchcraft or paganism, this is a MUST READ! Those who are looking to really shape and make their paths their own will also delight in this wonderful look at modern traditional witchcraft.

I enjoyed the book and some of the author's view points. She made me feel reassured that some of my beliefs, which don't follow the traditional Wicca path, are just fine. And some of the things she said really touched me. And I love a book that recommends more books for further reading.That being said, I also felt like every thing was sort of rushed. Most segments were very short and topics felt rushed over. And some times I felt like the author over did it on just giving her opinions about things. But all in all, it was worth the read.

Weave the Liminal: Living Modern Traditional Witchcraft is one of those books that feels like balm for the soul. It is one of the best books on Witchcraft I have read in a really long time. Weaving together spirituality, magick, and practical insight together – Tempest makes traditional witchcraft not only applicable in one’s everyday life but as individually unique as the soul of every witch that reads it. The book is extremely inspiring and written with wit, humor, poetry, power, and wisdom. The writing inside this book is as beautiful as Tempest’s paintings that grace its pages throughout.I firmly believe that this book will be one of the monolithic witchcraft books influencing witches for ages to come and I highly suspect it will be one of those books that’s considered essential reading in magickal circles of all types regardless of experience or background. Weave the Liminal: Living Modern Traditional Witchcraft will enrich not only your understanding of witchcraft, but your connection to the forces which are integral to witchcraft itself — including the self — while inspiring the reader to forge a path that is uniquely their own. I could go on gushing for hours over this book and spoil its contents, but instead, I will just recommend that you get your hands on a copy as soon as possible.

This book has refined my path more powerfully than I ever could have imagined and offers freedom of choice rather than prescriptive demands.

Let me start by saying I liked this one. I don’t think I liked it more than the last book, my gut reaction is a 3.5. But I also DO think I liked it more than the last book because we aren’t in routine simulations anymore and there is so much more to see and learn. It was so great to finally get down to business on the planet surface, see some relationships grow and twist and burn and rage and...damn. Getting answers to the fallout of the final chapters was more painful than I imagined. But mix that with a new world to explore, lots a monsters and aliens, a healthy dash of shade and political intrigue, and this was pretty darn good for a centerpiece of a trilogy.The next book is going to be the true test of how I feel about the whole series. I sort of wish it were here already. That next cover is glorious! And I think the author has such a great handle on the plot and all the twists and surprises that we will be in for a delicious finale. So 4 stars it is! Can’t wait for the next one!

If you haven't read the first book, do it. And when you've finished with that, READ THIS ONE. This book is epic from beginning to end. Finally, you're on the alien planet and we get to see more than what Babel is telling them in the first one. This book was INSANE. I can't even begin to describe how fast I was reading this book to make sure I read it all fast enough. I skipped dinner and shut my phone off because it was so great that I had to keep going.

Omg! I was super excited for this book!We follow Genesis 12 to eden....and it’s everything that they imagined....well almost. Babel’s lies run Nyxia deep and lies always come to the fore front.The adamites or as we know them now the Imagio are a special people who are honored to have the genesis 12 there, but lies run deep on both sides and when a war comes a choice has to be made.

Wow! This book was amazing! I loved the first book in the Triad when I read it, so I had to get this one as soon as it was out, even though it cost more than I'm usually willing to pay for an ebook. I'm definitely glad I bought it! Now, I can't wait for the last book! If you like science fiction with realistic, understandable characters, believable situations, and plenty of suspense, you'll love this book! I highly recommend it!

I was a big fan of Reintgen's first book, and Nyxia Unleashed does not disappoint. So many sophomore efforts don't come close to matching the success and quality of the first book, but this book is definitely an exception. As a school teacher in an urban setting, I also really appreciate how accessible this book is to students of color. I will definitely be recommending Nyxia Unleashed to all of my students. It is an exciting, well-crafted book that leaves me wanting desperately for next spring to get here so I can read the final installment!

I love this series so far. The characters are realistic and relatable. I generally prefer to read about heroines but Emmett is such an awesome hero to get to know and I find myself attached to his character. There are some crazy twists in this sequel and I can't wait to read the next one!

Several novel story elements (eg the competitions) and the author did a good job bringing them to life. I’m eager for the third and final book!

This book was amazing! The plot was keen and discriptive, as for the main character ( Emmet ) was described and worded carefully with the intent to make the reader feel something for this team of rag tag kids. one problem I had reading is that if someone died or suffered a huge blow, there just wasn't any detail for the the event. So, in conclusion, this was a great book!

What made me interested in Val Lewton was learning that he grew up in the exotic mansion of his aunt Alla Nazimova, a flamboyant Ukrainian actress in the Sara Bernhardt tradition, who was also the real-life prototype for SUNSET BOULEVARD’s Norma Desmond. What kind of man did that strange little boy grow up to be? This book is not really a biography, but a survey of Lewton’s work and his influence on the development of the narrative film. Lewton is considered an American auteur, which is somewhat unusual because he was not a director, but a producer (who anonymously rewrote the scripts of his films). He had to work with very small budgets and create films from titles chosen by the studio. His first film for RKO was CAT PEOPLE. From that title, he came up with an intelligent and atmospheric horror film in which the chills come primarily from what the audience imagines, rather than what it actually sees. And thus began a dizzying 4-year period in which he created eleven feature films for RKO that included I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE, THE LEOPARD MAN, CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE, and THE BODY SNATCHER. The films were well-done despite the low budgets, primarily because Lewton was able to use the talent that RKO had acquired through their deal with Orson Welles’ Mercury Theatre, including editors Mark Robson and Robert Wise. Lewton allowed them to direct. The first three Lewton films for RKO were directed by Jacques Tourneur, who learned his craft from his famous father Maurice Tourner. Tourner, Wise, and Robson all went on to major Hollywood careers. After the discussion of Lewton’s career, Bansak includes chapters about each of them and a final survey of other films that have been influenced by “the Lewton touch.”It seems to me that the central concern of this book is an examination of just what IS “the Lewton touch.” First of all, the scripts were literate. Lewton was very well read and drew heavily upon classic literature for his inspiration. I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE is a Caribbean retelling of JANE EYRE. (A resourceful female protagonist is often a feature of these films.) The men who made these films, Wise in particular, had extensive experienced in radio. The soundtracks for these films achieve a lot of the effects of the Lewton touch (“the Lewton Bus!”). Because of the low budgets, the lighting was deliberately kept dim most of the time, but the directors of photography Lewton hired (most notably Nicholas Musuraca) excelled at working in that kind of lighting. Often in the Lewton films there is a long scary walk in the dark when there is no music, the only sounds heard are footsteps or a cracking twig. The “Lewton walk” was a huge influence on suspense films.This book is basically excellent, although I’m not so sure the final chapter was really worth including as the point had already been made. I learned a great deal from reading FEARING THE DARK and I was entertained, too. I was able to see a few of the films discussed in the book on TCM while I was reading the book. I was really able to appreciate them in ways I could not before. Five stars.

McFarland & Co. have published many fine books on film folks, and this is one of my favorites. Not only because I'm a big fan of the Lewton productions, but it's a brilliantly written book. Lewton was responsible for some of the best so-called Horror movies ever made, like "I Walked With A Zombie", "The Body Snatcher" and "Curse Of The Cat People". -All favorite films of mine. The book naturally covers all the famous thrillers, but it also tells the story of his relatively short life. I especially like the anecdote about how Lewton apparently once tossed away the script for "Gone With The Wind", calling it sentimental trash !. -Way to go, Val - I couldn't agree more. Lewton really knew what it took to make a good and eerie movie full of atmosphere, but film-makers of today sadly seem to have forgotten all about this. -Suspense is not something you can SEE, it's something you're supposed to FEEL. Director Robert Wise later showed what he learned in the "Lewton school", when he gave us the original "The Haunting". Director Jan De Bont recently showed us he didn't pay attention in his class. He, and everybody else ought to read this wonderful book.

The concept of producer is misleading and mostly boring. (Mr. Jerry 'Pearl Harbor' Bruckheimmer I'm looking at you. Shame on you....) Other times there are 'producers' who are assigned by movie studios to deliver the movie on time, and on budget. Val Lewton was one of those producers, given an assignment, and always a subordinate of the RKO film system. Yeah, it was/is a bad system, but there are & were producers who not only 'oversaw' film but were a creative part of those same projects. There have been so FEW of them. Val Lewton was one of them. What a legacy. Val Lewton's productions had a talented staff and even better directors. Considering the budget of those epic films ('Cat People', its sequel, 'The Body Snatcher)it's astonishing how vital these films are. I don't have alloted time to tell you, but Carol Reed's 'The Third Man,' Hitchcock's 'Psycho' shower scene, and many other films owe a debt to Lewton's creative influence. Val Lewton created a profound influence that's here with us today. But you already know that. That's why you clicked on to my review. Buy this book.

I have found that I actually like these designs in this book even a little better than the first book. This is because I found these scenes to be a little more interesting and fun to color. The designs are by the same team of illustrators who were responsible for the first book, namely: James Newman Gray, Lee Teng Chew, and Jan Smith. There are 45 designs (even more if you count the title and preface pages.)The episodes included are from 1964 through 2015, so the range of Dr. Who's represented is good. This time the designs focus on Dr. Who in various time periods – including Vikings, ancient Egypt, the Battle of Hastings, with Winston Churchill and even with Shakespeare among many others. The designs are well drawn with clean black lines though it is easy to see that these designs are hand-drawn for the most part as the lines are not perfectly straight. Some designs are fairly open and easy to color while others are more intricate and will be a little more challenging but still a lot of fun.The book is well made once again. The designs are printed on one side of deep cream colored non-perforated paper. On the back of each page is a thumbnail version of the design along with a quote that is applicable to the design, the name of the episode and the year it was filmed and, in some cases, which Dr. Who it pertains to. The cover can be colored as well and has deep red foil touches which enhance it. The publisher once again missed an opportunity by not providing designs on the inside of the fold-out, attached cover; however, there are two flaps you can color if you wish where the printing is white on red background. The binding is sewn rather than glued, so removing pages is a matter of snipping threads. A good number of designs merge into the binding area so snipping threads may be the way to go if you decide to remove pages.This is what I found in coloring in and testing medium on this book:45 Dr. Who Time Travel DesignsPrinted on one side of the pagePaper is heavyweight, deep cream color, very smooth, and non-perforated.Sewn BindingAlcohol-based markers bleed through the page. I was able to get good color and layer the same color and mixed colors well with both oil and wax based pencils. I had a little trouble with blending (using a pencil style blender stick.) The color smeared a tiny bit more than I am used to and that is probably because the paper is very smooth. The pencil did blend but not as well as it did with the British release of this book.My comparison of the US and UK version is fairly short. They weighed the same and are the same size. They contain the same designs. The differences are slight. The cover of the US version is slightly lighter with slightly darker red foil. The US paper is a much deeper cream tone. Both bindings are sewn but are sewn together on different pages. The biggest differences is in the feel of the paper. The US version paper is much smoother.I am happy with both but if I planned on doing a lot of blending of pencil or if I wanted lighter paper, I would opt for the UK version. Otherwise, I like both versions.

This was a gift for a friend who loves Doctor Who. She really loved it!It's a nice coloring book with plenty of pages to color. The pages are thick, so you could probably use markers, along with colored pencils. The scenes span all 12 Doctors, including Hartnell, Baker, Eccleston, Tennant, and beyond. There are companions included in many, if not most, of the scenes. I was especially tickled to note the presence of Captain Jack Harkness alongside Nine and Rose. On the back side of each page, there's a quote from the illustrated episode, along with a miniature version of the illustration. I'm not sure why they needed to include a "mini-me" version of each scene, way too small to actually color, but there you go.The scenes are a bit . . . well, almost psychedelic in nature. Lots of abstract imagery, with swirling lines and highly stylized portraits of the characters. It works if you enjoy coloring tiny, random shapes---which a lot of people do. I'm told it's relaxing, though I haven't tried it personally.In any case, this coloring book makes a great gift for any Doctor Who fan. Five stars and highly recommended for any dedicated Whovian, or sci-fi fan who enjoys adult coloring books. I suppose it could work for a child, but they might have trouble with the complexity of the images, I dunno.

My husband and I have been longtime Doctor Who fans. I received the previous "blue" Doctor Who Coloring Book as a birthday present - I was simply delighted. Now that it's almost all completed, it was time for the second "red" Doctor Who Travels in Time book. There are different artists who have different art styles portraying the life of Doctor Who, his companions and the hideous enemies. The Daleks and Davros are my favorites to color and watch on TV. I recommend colored pencils for shading but I also mix glitter pens and regular pens into the mix. So many TARDIS' to color, so little time. I use my imagination - no two of my blue police boxes are exactly the same.

Like the previous, Doctor Who Coloring Book, this book is sewn together and the pages are not perforated. If you want to take the pages out to color you’ll probably have to cut the threads apart instead of using an x-acto knife or the like. Some of the illustrations go all the way to the binding, which was really annoying because I couldn’t finished the full picture.Also like the previous, the opposite side of each page is mostly blank with only a quote from the show and a small picture of the reverse page. The pages are off-white and thick- but if you want to use markers or pens that bleed, such as sharpies, I’d still use a piece of craft or construction paper to make sure it doesn’t get on the next page.The illustrations in this book are better than the previous book in my opinion. The scenes are more dynamic and there are less ‘filler’ pages than the last book. There are still pages where parts of the illustrations are way too small to color for my liking. It’s hard to see and even harder to keep in the lines and get the picture how I want.For the old-school Doctor Who fans, this book contains many more of the classic Doctors which made me happy. Overall, a great coloring book for Whovians.

This is a must for any Whovian fan out there, whether you color or not. If you're particular about the details, this might not be the book for you. While the images depicted are true to the storyline, it's the characterization that might be a bit of a tickler to you. Some of the characters, while close to their real-life counterparts, aren't quite as realistic looking as the current book. Still, that being said, some of my favorite images are in this book and I haven't put it down since I got it!
