Voices of Ancient Egypt is a book for kids. The left page is filled with a water painting portraying the person who is described on the right page. It tells about different occupations in ancient Egypt, and how life might be like a person of that trade. In the back, it goes into more history of ancient Egypt, and more in depth about each job.I like it because it's full of information, and is written in a way to help kids understand the jobs and lives of people long ago.

Perfect book for our study of Ancient Egypt!

We liked the book a lot. It's read in 5 minutes or less, but still great pictures and beautiful book.

Gorgeous watercolor illustrations of workers busy at work accompany text in prose style in this non-fiction picture book for children. The writing is eloquent and is a fresh change from the usual content of most history books. Using first-person narrative, the worker tells what their job is like. Some examples of the vocations covered are launderer, scribe, farmer, pyramid-builder, embalmer, and dancer.There are two pages of background information about the 13 vocations, and a list of source materials at the back that is helpful for locating more resources to use when learning about life in Ancient Egypt.I can't say enough about the beautiful illustrations by Barry Moser. The cover's illustration is exactly the type of high-quality work that lies inside the book. The background paper for the entire book looks similar to papyrus. A wonderful book! I hope that National Geographic makes this one in a series and that future book have equally high quality writing and illustrations.

This book is good but the illustrations are very inaccurate. Egyptians did not have pale skin nor did their hair look the way it does in the pictures. If you buy this book please look up how they actually look to show your children.

I love the songs in this book. The notes are not on a staff, but in simplistic form with the note name printed on the note head. The position is shown in an illustrated drawing. These are much longer songs than anything the students have done in their lesson books, to this point, however, and I would not recommend using it unless you have a very talented student who needs a bit more challenge (yet still needs some time for their fingers to grow), or at the end of level one at the soonest.The songs are traditional, standard kids' church songs including Jesus Loves Me, and This Little Light of Mine. Most songs are two pages long, about four to five lines. There is a story line and teacher duet / accompaniment as well.My daughter is 7 years old, and using the level 2 Mozart books. She is the type of learner that does best with going slowly and passing a ton of pages as opposed to being assigned one or two challenging songs (even though she could do them, this shuts her down.) When she first started "This Little Light" it was a bit intimidating to her, and it took her a bit to get comfortable with doing that long of a piece.So my advice - know your student's learning style. These are wonderful if your child knows where the notes are in middle C position and are beginning to show some independence in their playing, but may be a bit intimidating at first for some.

In Alfred's Little Mozarts series, Mozart Mouse and Beethoven Bear help Clara Schumann-Cat choose music for the children's choir to sing in church. These are nice arrangements of popular sacred tunes that can be played in middle-C position. If you want your students to be able to play the songs in other keys, color in the quarter notes, white-out the half and wholes notes, and write in the solfege syllables above the notes. Glad that Amazon keeps these in stock. My wife and I run a Music Academy and buy all our books from Amazon. When we pick up a new student, I can get their book here in less than two days and have it ready for their next lesson. Music for Little Mozarts is a fun series for beginning students. We have bought the little stuffed animals to go with it and our students love it!

My daughter started piano in the Little Mozart series this past summer. It is so easy to work with her on her lessons and it introduces concepts in a fun way with the main characters so she can understand. Goes a bit slow so it is definitely for young piano students, but it is a great place to start for a first or second grader who is anxious to learn. The "Go To Church" book is teaching her songs that she is familiar with such as "This Little Light of Mine" and "Jesus Loves Me". She gets such joy out of being able to play a song for us!

This little book contains great Sunday school songs that a young student can master easily. If you're child/student has completed Book 1 and is currently in Book 2, this music would be perfect for them to play. The only reason I did not give it five stars was because the notes are shown without a staff. This is done to make it simpler for young children, but my 5 year old would be perfectly fine with the staff. I made a photocopy of the book and drew the staff lines with a ruler.

I bought this piano book after my daughter finished book 1, but it was too difficult to start with. I know she will grow into it, but I had hoped she would be able to play the first few pieces since it was labeled 1&2.

Little Mozarts has been a great curriculum for my kindergartener to begin learning to play this year!

We got this for my daughter and it was not good at all. The teaching little fingers to play series is much better.

So I decided to start at the beginning and bought the whole origins series package just finished it and the next book in line.Believe me when I tell you it grows on you.It sinks into you so you can't wait to read the next one in line.My only worry is that I will eventually catch up and then I will have to wait for the next one to spawn.lol.Dinos, war, space, colonization and empire building... Like the add for prego sauce. ...... " it's in there".

The series will start with a single training class of leaders, with the guidance of the head trainer and director. The first books are the slowest, but most defining of the concepts that will ring true for the series. What will keep an empire that will eventually span hundreds of systems, trillions of people, and aliens from internally collapsing into the darkness when challenged? What really makes the trailblazers the leaders that shape Star Force? Rome wasn't built in a day, it's the same with Star Force. To build the empire, you need training. Lots and lots of quality training with some good friends. The adventure will be well worth reading.

From the time I started reading this book, I was enthralled. The story telling is phenomenal and I loved the characters as well as the world they live in. Even being a fictional story, it's still believable in itself and I am excited to read more. Thank you for sharing.

if you are a geologist there are some things you are going to have to let slide, but other than that it is a good read with an interesting premise. the first four books are about the training of a military force designed to protect humanity from a force that abandoned earth 100,000 years ago. while you might think a tale about boot camp is boring you would be wrong. solid physics and interesting ideas about the physical limits you can reach as a soldier keep you interested as they train to become a force outside of government to face a force humanity can't beat. reminiscent of starship trooper, Heinlein's book, not the movie.

This is a great book series the forthought that went into it is astounding the author isn't so much as writing a book as wrighting prologue or a first chapter I think its a bit of a mix really theres not a whole lot of actions in the first few but it picks up in a way that is truly cool books but if your looking for a Empire building series thats still being developed you need to read this

Very well written. Keeps you engaged. Extremely realistic as far as human behaviour as well as technological advancement. And the fact that there is already so much published d will keep me in reading material for a while! 😉

The concept is interesting but the book got bogged down in the details of buildings, spaceports and training.I understand the concepts of teaching the trainees to think and work together.At this speed, this series could outlive me.

Good focus on the plot but after that main character development he disappears into the team and the story, for me, lost direction. It came back together as the story wound down and I will continue the read to find out what develops.

I have enjoyed Ideals holiday publications for many years. The simple poetry, inspirational quotes, illustrations and photographs are simple and very pleasant, perfect to share with children and nice antidote to busy adult life, too. Ideals publications are oriented to Christian values.

I have enjoyed the Ideals publications (seasonal) since my teen years when my mother would purchase them - specifically the Christmas and Easter/Spring editions. Each year Ideals collects poems, sayings, Scripture, hymns, and beautiful pictures to bring the reader a collection suitable for that season and filled with inspiration, beautiful word usage, and readings worth perusing again and again.The reading of poetry is somewhat a lost art and most folks won't sit long enough for the nuances of poetic phraseology to envelope their heart and mind. But if introduced early in life it is often enjoyed throughout life.In Easter Ideals 2017 the collection speaks to the loveliness of bursting Spring, colors of flowers, and the dressing of nature reflected in the dressing of little girls in spring dresses and bonnets. The readings segue into the more serious aspect of the Easter season - that of the resurrection of Christ the Lord. I love this aspect most of all.I recommend the acquisition of Easter Ideals 2017. Note: I personally do not like the Easter egg traditions and this Ideals does include some of these.

I bought as a gift for my mother. She introduced me to Ideals years ago,and I was so happy to see it was still being published. Would like to see the Mother's Day issue published again. The world needs more beauty. Thank you for keeping this magazine alive.

I love how it has so much details of events that happened. When it came in the mail product looked good, no bents or folds. Would recommend.

In a conversational, yet professional, tone, the author takes us through an intriguing overview of world history. His knowledge and enthusiasm for his topics are much appreciated.

Very boring.

Very consice. A great overview of major events. But it has a few problems.... the author falls victim to a common problem of historians - he has injected his own philosophy onto certain events instead of clearly stating them as they are. An example of this is where he paraphrased the US Bill of Rights, and completely revised the intention of the 10th amendment so is reads as he'd like it to, rather than what it actually says. Another issue with the book is that one gets lost geographically when the author uses old place names instead of current. A map here and there would really add to understanding. An example is Mesopotamia - it's location is vaguely described once, and thereafter we are left to either try to remember, or seek out a map elsewhere.

For the amount of pages, humanity's history is succinctly covered. The author's writing was sometimes amateur in tone.

Scientists for the most part stick to peer reviewed, confirmed and generally accepted theory in a book for the general audience. Sadly this most often leads to didactic prose that conveys little of the excitement of scientific endeavor. To dramatize the scope of the conclusion after it is reached, Neal DeGrasse Tyson style, is not the same.Nick Lane draws findings from disparate fields, combines them in very complex decision trees, and shows how they suggest ideas about the origin and nature of life that are compelling if not generally accepted. He is given some latitude by the fact that nothing in evolutionary biochemistry is generally accepted. The intellectual leaps are at that level where real science is done. Exciting and accessible to non-specialists though not necessarily easy.Reading these books is a pleasure akin to watching a world class athlete. The result of reading these books is a very different and greatly expanded understanding of the living world.

As a research scientist, I am highly critical of scientific reviews and literature published for mass consumption.Nick Lane is one of the few authors who consistently does his homework and his presentation of the state of the art,both in terms of hard evidence and hypothesis, is spot on.

This is a great overview of so many topics that are all under the umbrella of oxygen. While there is information that the general public will find interesting, I find that the way it is written is probably more appropriate for someone with a scientific background as there are some highly technical areas. The information about Vitamin C and anti-oxidants was extremely insightful because this book provides a clearer picture of everything that could be happening in our bodies in order to allow us to be healthy. Good read and I will use some of this information for my AP Biology class, as there are some very interesting and insightful examples that are noteworthy. This is the first book that I have read by Nick Lane, but it won't be my last!!

We've all heard the story of life on Earth, how animals breathe in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide while plants take in the carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. Life, then, is in perfect balance with each kingdom providing what the other kingdom needs. Turns out, however, it's a little more complicated than that. In "Oxygen" author and biochemist Nick Lane takes an in depth look at the role oxygen plays in the evolution of life as we know it on Earth. Just how, and when, did life adjust to this deadly element? And, what effect does it have on our everyday lives and aging pricess? While written for layman reader with some background in chemistry this is defiantly not an easy read. Lane pulls no punches when explaining chemical processes and he must often use scientific nomenclature to identify the various enzymes and the inner workings of a cell. The origin of life is not addressed in this book but he does examen current theories on how life evolved from that "Last Common Universal Ancestor" to become the plants, animals and other organisms that we're all familiar with. Life did not create oxygen, it only found a way to free oxygen from its chemical bonds and make use of its benefits while avoiding its dangers. Just how, and when, did LUCA become the complex life forms that populate our world; bacteria, viruses and multi celled organisms. Using the work and theories of other specialists as well as his own extensive background in biology and chemistry, Lane explains how two kinds of bacteria may have joined forces to become the eukaryote life forms that seem to dominate the world. After that the next challenge that life faced was oxygen itself and how life used it while avoiding its dangers. A good portion of the book is devoted to how oxygen is used by most organisms, including humans, and how it influences growth, reproduction, aging and, finally, death. As in his previous books, Lane's writing is clear, concise and ever interesting while explaining this complex subject. I had to struggle through some portions of this book but, in the end, it was worth the effort. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a challenging read on the inner workings of life and the environment. I had no downloading or technical problems with this Kindle edition.Last Ranger

I read this book on the string recommendation of my brother. It provides a fascinating (and surprising) history of life on earth - not the history I expected - starting at the very beginning. There was a lot of chemistry in the first half and if you are not an engineer or a scientist, you might find it daunting - which is the only reason it lost a star (I am an engineer). The latter half uses the foundation set to provide a very compelling theory of diseases and the causes thereof. I would strongly recommend this book to any medical professional or bio-chemist. Fascinating.

The other read was mitochondria also by Nick Lane. It took two readings each to absorb their depth and how the puzzle of life's evolution, that began shortly after the earth cooled down, to present and how and why the energy engine of mitochondria evolved. In Oxygen how oxygen facilitates the possibility of multi cellular life forms and is largely responsible for their demise, either for single cells or the entire organism. Both books are loaded with information and are best read as a single book full of very readable knowledge that will satisfy or wet the appetite of all.

I'm still reading this. It's a very interesting book but I wouldn't call it light reading. The author goes to great pains to not only give you the facts but to explain why he knows it's a fact. Very well documented and researched and lists of sources.makes you realize just how improbable this world really is.
