This is an incredible story, very beautifully told. So much of what we know about WWII and the Holocaust is the impersonal, big picture facts. Bella tells an extraordinary personal account of what she endured as a Polish Jew. The most striking thing about the book was how well she conveyed the loving, safe, vibrant family and childhood she had before the war. (She was born in 1925.) I got the impression that the love of her family managed to sustain her even after they were gone.As an adult and an avid reader, I couldn't put this book down. And I also think that it is a very appropriate book for younger readers. The horrors of what were happening are contained to a very personal level, and are not graphic. My 8 year old son is fascinated by World War II and is a fan of Michael Morpurgo's books (e.g. Elephant in the Garden), and I will share this book with him as well. I hope it will be used in schools to personalize the history of the Holocaust.I'm grateful to Bella for sharing her story.

Thank you Bella Kuligowska Zucker for sharing your story with the world. You are an amazing woman! She takes the reader through what it was like be be the only person in her family to survive the Holocaust. She was a teenager living in Poland when she was rounded up with her friends and family by the Nazis and sent to several Jewish ghettos. She survived the horrors of World War II and living through losing her family members. Her ability to adapt to the circumstances she was placed in and taking the opportunity of changing her identity, along with moving from place to place and doing odd jobs was described quite well. She takes the reader through her journey of how she took the risk of stealing the identity (birth certificate) of a Catholic girl, Sabina Mazurek, and how this decision helps to save her life. I have read many books about the experiences of people who were victims of the Nazis and the tough choices they faced; they are the best source of revealing the suppressed secrets others have covered up for far too long. Thank you again Bella Kuligowska Zucker for sharing your true story.

I read this book and I thought it was very well written and organized. I Could not put it down. It is the true story of a young teenage girl that survived the horrors of a terrible time in history and a tribute to her murdered family.

I've read a lot of books on the holocaust but the writer continued her story through adulthood. i wish she had experienced the love and guidance she so deserved as does every child

I am touched and honored to read this true story. I think of when I was a young girl of her age and would I have the courage to do as she did? I come away from this book with a new appreciation of all the freedoms that I enjoy, and now take a moment to savior, on a daily basis.

It was interesting to see a woman's survival during the holocaust through a different lens. This is a fascinating story. I just wish the story had ended happily where it began. The life of a lone survivor is surely sorrowful and I'm glad Bella flourished eventually. Great book!

Absolutely enthralling read. I could not put this book down. Bella drew me into her story. The places so well illustrated with words. I am in awe of this young women.

Somewhat well told story that gripped my heart. I went to the museum many years ago and it renewed my feelings of hatred towards Hitler & the Nazi regime. I am not Jewish but the crimes against those people were inhumane. Never Forget.
