During a recent trip to Chicago, I used several guide books to plan our trip and to use during the visit; I found this particular reference was the one I used most frequently and the one I threw in the backpack as we headed out the door each day. This guide was indispensable, containing suggested itineraries, an overview of the city, great ideas for excursions -- tours, strolls, attractions, shopping and entertainment -- as well as a history of the city and superb chapters on hotels and restaurants. We even stayed at a hotel that was surprisingly inexpensive and in a great location, and one that our native Chicago friends didn't know about! The guide is written in a friendly style, is well-organized, has lots of maps, and is jam-packed with useful information.A superb guide to Chicago for families. Highy recommended.

Excellent book. Before any trip, I purchase a book from Frommers if that area has one. I have always been given great advice and pass it along to friends and family. The best travel guides anywhere. The book came quickly and in excellent shape.

Good book, great condition, Was shipped in the time limit but was the last book to arrive.

I am a Frommer's fan! If you already have the recent Frommer's Chicago, then you may find much of the information in this book a tad redundant. The book tackles topics pertinent to families: prices, facilities, times when families will feel most welcome, etc...I am very happy with my purchase and will pursue other Frommer's products in the future.

"Rip-roaring fiction and imaginative adventuring on all planes of experience."— Times Literary Supplement"Moravagine seeks damnation and extinction with a glee unequaled in literature. The only parallels that come to mind are Céline and Beckett."— Sven Birkerts, New Boston Review"An unbridled picaresque fantasy…full of tenderness, horror, and ink-black jokes of a visual intensity that recall Goya."— Financial Times"Savage, funny, wildly inventive."— John Lehmann, Sunday Telegraph

About the Author

Blaise Cendrars (1887–1961) was the pseudonym of Frédéric Sauser, the Swiss son of a French Anabaptist father and a Scottish mother. As a young man he traveled widely, from St. Petersburg to New York and beyond, and these wanderings proved the inspiration of much of his later poetry and prose. Settled in Paris in 1912, Cendrars published two long poems, “Easter in New York” and “The Transsiberian,” which made him a major figure in the poetic avant-garde. At the outset of World War I, he enlisted in the French Foreign Legion, losing an arm in the battle of the Marnes. A prolific poet, Cendrars was also an exceptional novelist, the author of Moravagine, Gold, Rhum, and The Confessions of Dan Yack, among many other books.Paul La Farge is the author of two novels: The Artist of the Missing, and Haussmann, or the Distinction, which was a New York Times Notable Book for 2001. His third book, The Facts of Winter, was in January 2005.

Doctor helps a homicidal lunatic, the title character, escape from an asylum, then becomes his companion on a worldwide tour of revolution, violence, homicide (of course), aviation, war, and a few other things. The narrator becomes more passive as the journey goes on, but Moravagine shows himself to be energetic, clever, thoroughly evil, and completely remorseless. The fun in this book comes from the imaginative circumstances and places the pair find themselves in. This is not quite the book I expected from the description on Amazon. Despite the subject matter, the book is far from disgusting or upsetting. At times, it almost reads like a real travelogue. It isn't easy to describe what a reader encounters here--but I recommend it to anyone looking for something completely different. In translation at least, it is a joy to read.

The title apparently means “Death to Vagina” or, alternately, “Death by Vagina.” Based on brief descriptions and reviews of it I had read on Amazon, I thought it would be more of a wild-riding, rip-roaring, semi-absurdist hoot. Well, it did seem to start out that way, but quickly settled down in terms of pace, gravitas, and narrative structure. Still a very good and fun read, though. There are some darkly amusing and arguably insightful commentaries from its two main characters’ philosophically eccentric, psychologically psychopathic, morally nihilistic, politically anarchistic, and culturally subterranean perspectives.

One of the most brilliant books I have read in a long, long time. Full of complex characters that really stand out and make you think. This is the kind of book you wanna keep next to a bottle of whisky, to be popped open and read when you're coming down and so is the rain. Introspective, relevant (especially after this current election) and all together a fascinating look into the mind of someone who could honestly represent anyone and everyone. Perfect!

Paul le Farge points out in his learned introduction to the nyrb edition of this tremendous novel that, as Blaise Cendrars is the alter ego of the author, Federic Sauser, so is Moravagine Blaise Cendrars' alter ego. Moravagine, perhaps the sole authentic descendant of the last King of Hungary, perhaps merely a hallucination is "a dark little man skinny, knotted and desiccated as a vine-stock, seemingly burned by the flame that flickers in the depths of his great eyes. His forehead is low. His eye-sockets deep. The circles beneath his eyes almost touch the creases about his mouth. His right leg, the knee afflicted with anchylosis, forms a right angle and he limps terribly. His hands dangle at the ends of arms as long as a monkey's"In this unprepossessing figure, first seen masturbating into a goldfish bowl, our narrator sees "the superb creature who was to lead me to a grandstand seat at a tremendous spectacle of revolution and transformation, the transvaluation of all social values and of life itself" and so he assists the superb creature from a psychiatric asylum (operated by Doctor Stein who lives "exclusively on curds of milk, steamed rice and buttered bananas...the initiator of the health-dress and hygienic camel-hair underwear"). Under orders from the sensationally effective and mysterious organisation of which they are members, the two swing across Russia, Europe and South America murdering and terrorising in the name of revolution."Here, then, are the new elements that were to pulverize the Empire. The powerful explosive and the choking gas into which A.A.A. had poured all his will for destruction. The infernal machine, the subtly triggered bombs into which Z.Z. had put all his longing and desire for suicide. The meticulous preparation of the assassination, the place, the chosen date, the designation of our accomplices, the assignment of roles, our training programme, the necessary stimulants, the armament - into which Ro-Ro (our leader, Ropschin) had put all his will for power, all his love of risk, his energy, his tenacity, his mad temerity, his audacity, his decisiveness. We were trimmed for action and could not have reversed the process if we had wanted to."Cendrars is a luminous, entrancing writer, the story is horrifically fascinating, and the prose dense and sublime. Moravagine is fifteen and in love -"Everything around me became a voice, an articulation, an incantation, a tumescence. I could see the swaying of the tree-tops: the foliage of the park opened and closed, borrowing the gestures of voluptuous forms; the sky was tense and arched like a rump. I became extraordinarily sensitive. Everything was music to me. An orgy of colour. Vigour. Health. I was happy. Happy. I was aware of the profound life and ticklish root of the senses. I threw out my chest. I felt myself strong, all-powerful. I was jealous of all nature. Everything should give in to my desires, obey my whims, bend before the wind of my breath. I commanded trees to fly, flowers to rise in the air, I ordered the meadows and the house foundations to run, to about-face. Rivers, flow back to your source: let all things fly to the west to feed the furnace of the sky against which Rita soars like a pillar of perfume."Unfortunately for Rita, "Woman is malignant. The history of all civilization shows us the devices put to work by men to defend themselves against flabbiness and effeminacy. Arts, religions, doctrines, laws and immortality itself are nothing but weapons invented by men to resist the universal prestige of women. Alas, these vain attempts are and always will be without the slightest effect, for woman triumphs over all abstractions". Women are "all-powerful", "masochistic", "malignant" and "engender death". So the intrepid couple do their best to cleanse the world of women, one at a time. Or at least Moravagine does the dirty work at which his companion never ceases to be amazed and amused. The closest this book comes to humour is when part of the organisation's plan necessitates travelling by rail, each in a barrel of sauerkraut:-"Loading and unloading can be very inconvenient for one anyone travelling in a barrel, for then he gets rolled, jarred and ricocheted and risks spending the rest of the voyage on his head. But all this has been thought of. Our barrels are carefully padded on the inside and an especially thick layer gives extra protection to the head and shoulders. The barrels are very spacious, you can live in them in relative comfort. They can be shut from the inside by a lever which is within reach of the hand. This system allows for ventilation on the way; the lever only pulled to during stops or trans-shipping. When the lever is locked the barrel is hermetically closed. At such times the traveller has two little rubber tubes at his disposal Through one of them he draws air from outside, through the other he breathes out air that has been used. It's important not to make a mistake, and it's rather awkward making use of these tubes, for as one is half-smothered by the fumes of the sauerkraut the tendency is to breathe normally. Above all one must keep one's mouth closed and breathe as slowly and regularly as possible. From the lever handle is suspended a little sack containing discs of pemmican, chocolate bars, a bottle of crème de menthe, a phial of ether and some sugar lumps."And there is worse to be found than some rather soiled sauerkraut when the train reaches its destination. You have been warned.Moravagine, the man and the novel, are fabulous, disgusting, verbose, audacious and absolutely nuts.

As the book progresses you follow the author's description of a person with serious mental illness but without any psychiatric jargon.

Very well written and spooky; enjoy on a rainy night, but pay attention to the intelligent insights.

A+

Fascinating even though I cannot find the main character to be sympathetic. You might want to read it if you have a taste for antique bizarre literature.

#345,992 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Pages 25 and 28 call for 1 celery. Is this one stalk or one cup or the entire head ? Units of measure need to be clearly specified. Also on page 106 for Deviled Eggs the instructions call for a 13 minute cooking time. The booklet that came with the cooker specifies a 7 minute cooking time. Using that cooking time results in perfect hard boiled eggs. If the eggs are cooked 13 minutes ( nearly twice as long) a more appropriate term would be petrified eggs.Other than these items this appears to be a pretty decent cookbook.

Weren't very many pictures and not very many recipes for the price. Wish cosori had something more like the instant pot bible cookbook.

This is a very good cookbook to use with the Cosori Electric Pressure Cooker. My favorite so far is Classic Chicken Mushrooms and Red Wine. Can't wait to try more recipes. The Cosori Pressure Cooker is a recent purchase.

Love my Cosori, it works great and it is so convenient.

We were looking for some simple recipes for the pressure cooker. "Quick and Easy" was not exactly the best description. A lot of these recipes contain many ingredients that most people wouldn't normally have around. I would say out of the 100 recipes, we may try a few.

Made some old recipes that normally take 3 hours - 25 min in this cosori and it wa delicious

Good product

It's a pleasure to find a recipe book that offers easy recipes that are family friendly as well as great for get togethers. The ingredients are easy to find.Recipes are well presented.A couple of tweaks would be great ie Coq au Vin can also be made with regular mushrooms.Taco seasoning is salty so a substitute such as;Chili powder.Cumin.Paprika.This is a personal choice as I always keep these spices on hand.I don't have a Cosori but these recipes will work with other Pressure Cooker multi- pots on the market. All in All I lovecokking and this is definitely a cookbook I will use.I received an advanced readers copy for an honest reviewof this book.It was a pleasure to review.I love cookbooks.I do recommend this arc or not.

I highly recommend this book, Preparing for the Glory, by John and Carol Arnott. I attended a conference at the Toronto Airport Christian Church in July 1997. I received an impartation of joy and the Father’s Love. I cried several times reading this book and got excited about the coming tsunami wave of God’s Glory and the greatest harvest of lost souls. John and Carol Arnott are two generals and wise stewards of the manifest presence of God. The suddenly of God’s presence showing up in Toronto on January 20,1994 is still burning in the hearts of many individuals and churches all over the world. Get prepared for the biggest wave of God’s Glory the world has ever seen! 🔥🔥🔥

John and Carol have demonstrated something that was rarely seen before in church history: faithfully stewarding a revival over time. They continue that stewardship in their new book, Preparing for the Glory. Chapter after chapter is written from a solid perspective: faithfulness to the Scriptures and church history and a deep commitment to what God is preparing us for.As someone who had the privilege of being there with them and experiencing my own personal touch in 1995, I listen when the Arnotts speak. I listen because they know His voice and are faithful stewards of what He gives. I highly recommend this book!

I love all of John & Carol Arnott's books. Normally, I take an abnormally long time to read most books (like 6 months!). However, the Arnott's books have captured my attention and interest so easily. I just started reading their newest book, "Preparing for the Glory," that I got for Christmas. I am already on the second to last chapter! It must be that we share a passion and undivided focus on the Holy Spirit's presence! 🔥🔥 If you love the Holy Spirit, you will love this book!Quotes"You see, when the Holy Spirit comes, He wants to take over. He doesn't just want to come on you a little bit; He wants all of you." (pg. 59)"God loves when we "tarry" in His presence through soaking, worship, and reading His Word. Being intentional with our time is a huge key to seeing revival. God also loves when we release our need for control and allow Him to do whatever He wants in and through us. Even if we fall over or look strange, He wants us to be willing to be filled by Him, no matter the cost. God loves us so He wants to be with us. He wants us to focus our attention on Him and to position our lives toward Him. In doing this, we make ourselves ready for revival." (pg 2)

An exceptional work by two exceptional people. May we take their wisdom to heart and let God lead us in His next great move.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I also believe that we are living in a time that a great move of God is on the way. There have been numerous signs given to us from God. These end times signs remind me of scripture in the gospels where Jesus tells the disciples what signs to look for. The body of Christ must prepare itself for this time. It is not time to put on the facades of being believers, we must "be" and "do" what we have been instructed by our heavenly father.

The book is great! I am president of Message of Faith Ministries. We have a Bible School. We are studying the history of Spirit out pourings. We recently finished the study of Azusa St and are now studying Toronto! I highly recommend this book! Dr. Franklin Hunt

As a whole I found this book challenging. The authors, based upon former moves of God, believe we are being prepared for the final move of God prior to the Second Coming of Christ. They gave some excellent suggestions for the Church to follow as this event approaches. An excellent read!.

Fantastic and insightful. Thankyou Carol and John for writing this book. I'm so grateful to be able to glean from your journey and learn wisdom. It has bought me back into true relationship with Jesus and given me a lot to think about and meditate on. With many blessings Alexandra McKenzie

Recently the descriptive "legend" has been bestowed willy-nilly on recipients of ephemeral celebrity and of dubious merit and accomplishment. But the Apollo Theater in Harlem, N.Y. is a genuine legend, equal, and even superior to any music theater in the world. The Classical Revival style building at 253 West 125th street in Harlem was designed by George Keiser and built in 1913-14 as the Hurtig & Seamon's Burlesque Theater, which had a "Whites Only" policy that was rigorously enforced. By the early 1930s, the place fell into disrepair and closed. Sidney Cohen, who owned several theaters in Harlem, bought and renovated the theater, renaming it "Apollo Theater" that catered to the Black residents of the area. The "Apollo" faced stiff competition from other music halls, especially Schiffman's "Lafayette" and Brecher's "Harlem Opera House" that booked dynamic acts, such as Bill `Bogangles' Robinson and Louis Armstrong. After Cohen died, Schiffman and Brecher took over the "Apollo" and progressed from vaudeville acts to swing era big bands, comic acts, dance and variety shows. The theater became a gathering place for the neighborhood; men, women and children would flock to the Apollo, when it opened its doors at 10 AM, and some would stay all day through the night to watch the multiple shows offered. Cartoons and newsreel were usually followed by a full length feature fim. ."Where stars are born and legends are made" was no idle boast from the "Apollo". A pantheon of future stars, black and white, were launched from its stage; Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Moms Mabley, the Staple Singers, Richard Pryor, Sam Cooke, Harry James, Stan Getz, Dave Brubeck, Stevie Wonder and myriad others performed at the "Apollo". Every Monday evening `Amateur Night' was broadcast on the 12 radio stations and hopeful performers would rub the Tree of Hope stump and later be chased by the "Executioner" or `Porto Rico', if booed by the rowdy audience. Ella Fitzgerald, Thelma Carpenter and Jimi Hendrix were First Prize winners of the competition. In 1962, James Brown and the Famous Flames, recorded the first `Live at the Apollo'. The album was a hit and a precursor to a series of live recordings by many artists from the "Apollo"."Showtime at the Apollo " by Ted Fox was originally published in 1983 and went to 3 editions, it has now been revived and has not lost any of its appeal. Fox has written the definitive history of the Apollo theater in Harlem, from its inception as a burlesque venue, reserved exclusively for Whites, to its metamorphosis into an iconic cultural center for African Americans and the entire nation. The author traces the genesis of the theater, the rise of the venue during the "Harlem Renaissance" to its deterioration during the neighborhood's decay by drug infestation, and finally to its rebirth under new ownership in 1980s.Through personal interviews, first source documentation, photo archives and in-depth research, Ted Fox has written a respectful, honest and unvarnished tribute to what is arguably the greatest music hall in the nation, equal to the venerable "Moulin Rouge" in Paris.Anyone interested in American music and/or African American history will find this to be a terrific resource and a great addition to any library.Full disclosure: I was asked by the publisher to review this complimentary EBook.

I cannot express what an insightful and fully informative education I had on the Apollo Theatre! My knowledge about the famous theatre did not go past the rock and soul era of the Theatre. But, there is so much to learn on exactly how far this theatre goes back. I believe every aspect of the history is told. This theatre was where everybody who was anybody made their appearance at the Apollo. The names that are mentioned, dating back to the earliest days, covering all types of shows, jazz, big bands, gospel, blues, rock, dance, comics, and novelty acts. To many performers, it was home while also known as the "number one" theatre on the map.In the forties, the war years, where Big Band dominated and you can learn about the greats here, Charlie Parker, Earl Hines, Ink Spots, Dinah Washington, Pearl Bailey, Billie Holliday, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynonie Harris, and so many more mentioned. The fifties covered Eartha Kitt, Josephine Baker and her costumes, and Johnny Mathis and his fear of performing before black people, etc. What was insightful was the talk about Amateur Night. So many famous people began their career on Amateur Night. How this was in operation was very interesting. You will also hear about the novelty acts, comedians and the dancers. There was a time in the sixties when the focus was on the Disc Jockeys and their popularity. Equally telling was the Gospel era at the Apollo, gospel women, Big Mama Thornton, Sister Rosetta Tharp, quartets such as The Dixie Hummingbirds, Soul Stirrers. Most well-known to me was the era of the sixties, James Brown, Ray Charles, Jackie Wilson, etc.The photo images are plentiful, great historic photos of the past. It is wonderful to get an idea of the entertainers, conditions, staff, buildings, mechanics, operations, etc. The later chapters focus on the Apollo struggling and "How the Apollo Got It's Groove Back".Again, I have not read a more comprehensive, thoroughly insightful, entertaining history on an iconic "home", the Apollo. Rizzo

Excellent synopsis of the history of a great theater. From its origins, through the depression to the '80s the theater showcased not only acts, but music. Located in Harlem, it was the theater hosting Black actors, singers, dancers before they were able to break into mainstream or white theaters. It was THE unique theater well ahead of its time and original in its format. The best and greatest white acts begged to get on stage while those growing up in Harlem called that stage "home." Worthwhile reading.

This book is a tender blend of juicy gossip, incredible research forged into a fascinating story, and a definitive re-telling of the fabled Apollo. No history of American music can omit the extraordinary talent assembled at an unassuming theater in Harlem. Ted Fox, using interviews, an infectious passion for his subject, and a captivating writing style, takes readers on a tour through the Apollo's history. Fox is no romantic. He sees and tells the whole story. The talent is on display, but so is the gambling and the robberies. The business history of the Apollo, seemingly not a very fascinating story to tell, becomes a tale that illuminates the realities of the music business in a way I haven't read before. And while this book is, as promised, a history of the Apollo, it also is a sequence of snapshots of performers. There's Ray Charles backstage playing his piano hoping to get in front of the audience. There's Elvis, dazzled by being in the place all the performers thought of as home. This book is applied sociology, giving us an unblinking picture of race in America, a picture accompanied by the beat of incomparable music.

Showtime At The Apollo is a great read--fun, fast, and entertaining! For those of us who weren't there backstage or in the audience, this book is the next best thing! The Apollo lives! Ted Fox has given a precious gift to all who are passionate about this music!

Ultimate Star Wars is in essence the encyclopedia of Star Wars. This large 320-page hardcover published by DK Books is meant to be a comprehensive reference and companion to the Star Wars universe. As you would expect from DK Books, Ultimate Star Wars is packed with lots of information and wonderful pictures. There are four sections to the book, namely Characters and Creatures, Locations, Technology and Vehicles. Each character, creature or subject is covered in chronological manner as they appear in the films and the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebel. There are also key events pulled out from the timelines included. This should refresh your memory regarding the universe while you wait for the next film Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Some of the information have been published in other Star Wars books over the years. For example, there are the vehicles and spaceships from Star Wars: Complete Vehicles or planet information from Star Wars: The Essential Atlas, etc. That is however no excuse not to get this book because everything is now collected in one beautiful and convenient volume.Highly recommended to all Star Wars fans.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

Ultimate Star Wars is a great book that will appeal of fans of all ages and interest levels. One of the authors, Ryder Windham, has worked on many great Star Wars books previously and does a great job compiling detailed information about the movies and their components. In his introduction, he begins with an interesting point: think of Ewoks, or Lobot, or the Slave I. These are never mentioned by name in the films, yet most casual fans are aware of them and know their names. That means they somehow absorbed that information from another source - perhaps the internet, a video game, a novel, an animated series, or maybe even an encyclopedia like this. The book is organized by topics - the first half of the book is Characters and Creatures, and then the second half of the book covers things like Locations, Technology, and Vehicles. Appearing at various points throughout the encyclopedia are "Key Events" (the Duel on Mustafar, Training on Dagobah, etc.)The book is full of detail... each major character gets a biography, important events which they were involved, and sometimes other tidbits of info such as their wardrobe, their weapons, etc. Important characters like Princess Leia and Obi-Wan Kenobi get a full 2-page spread, while smaller characters like Poggle the Lesser or Jek Porkins only get a fraction of a page. But its the inclusion of these small characters and creatures (who may only be on screen for a few seconds) that make the encyclopedia useful and comprehensive. Each section also includes a "timeline" and a "behind the scenes". So for example, the section on vehicles will have a Vehicle Timeline that covers the major events in the saga involving ships and transports - the Boonta Eve podrace, the Battle of Yavin (which destroyed the Death Star), etc. Then there will be a behind the scenes page that shows an AT-AT miniature, an early TIE fighter and X-Wing concept sketch, etc.For those wondering what canon is used for the encyclopedia, it seems to be the six Star Wars films as well as the Clone Wars and Rebels TV series. In looking through the book, I could not find any included subjects that were strictly EU and did not appear in the films/animated series.I should also mention that the book includes a nice foreword by Anthony Daniels, who briefly discusses the complexity of the saga and admits that despite his involvement in the saga over 30 years even he doesn't know all the facts.Overall, this is a highly-recommended product. The casual Star Wars fan will likely learn a lot; and even the most die-hard fans should learn something obscure that they did not know before. For a high-res image gallery, visit my blog: movieartbook.com/2015/04/ultimate-star-wars-book-review.htmlYou can also see my HD unboxing/flip-through here: youtube.com/watch?v=VcjBp5Nip3oThanks for reading, I hope this review was helpful!

This isn't a novel, it's a "pretend Star Wars is real and then draw a bunch of diagrams that show how everything 'works'" kind of fake-encylopedia.That said, it's nearly perfect in this role. My kids and I have read and re-read many of these entries.Popping it open is like jumping into the Wikipedia of a galaxy far, far away. Whatever page you hit is likely to look great, contains something very interesting, and reference a half-dozen other cool stuff elsewhere in the book. It's a great resource for anyone into Star Wars fandom, RPG's, comics, or similarly lore-thick approach to Star Wars. It likely has no practical, real world application, but is a great world-bible and springboard for SW-flavored imaginations.

This is the greatest Star Wars book ever! It has everything you need to know about the Star Wars Universe, like the characters, weapons, technology, vehicles, creatures, locations, and more, from Episode I: The Phantom Menace to Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, including Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. This is the perfect book for all Star Wars fans.

Amazing, high quality, coffee table style book for the Star Wars fans in the house. My eight year old son received as a Christmas present and was in awe of this book. My husband immediately picked it up and loved it even more than the 8 yr old. Even my old kids were enthralled. The pictures and quality are simply amazing. It covers the vehicles, creatures, and other characters with interesting details as well as crisp and dramatic pictures. Everything you want to know about Star Wars!

Great book. It appears to be a combination of all the other books for the movies, locations and vehicles. Since it is a combination book it may not be in depth as a devoted visual guide for one movie, the locations book or the vehicle books. At over 300 pages it has a lot of content. It includes the Clone Wars and the first season of Rebels, but doesn't include The Force Awakens.
