John C. Lennox (PhD, DPhil, DSc) is Professor of Mathematics in the University of Oxford, Fellow in Mathematics and the Philosophy of Science, and Pastoral Advisor at Green Templeton College, Oxford. The author (John Lennox) did such a good job presenting multiple ideas and theories for various interpretations of Genesis. This book does not argue reasons for or against believing in evolution, but more talks about what the bible tells us and combines it with that we now know from science. He gently starts the book out reminding readers of a time when Christians were determined to prove that the sun moved around a fixed earth because of references in the bible that seemed to suggest that. He believes the bible is the infallible word of God, but that our interpretations of it don't hold that same weight. He encourages readers in what my favorite Christian preacher Alistar Begg says that "The main things are the Plain things, and the Plain things are the main things" I am humbled and feel my mind has opened a bit to the warning not to take popular opinion, or tradition as excuses for not trying to interpret the truth.There are some things the Bible is pretty obvious and clear on. "In the Beginning GOD"... did it. He's the Creator and He did it in a phased approach. How long those phases were, be it 24 literal hours, 24 hours with long breaks in between acts of new levels of creation complexity, or long ages of creation between each Genesis tier, is highly debatable. The author provides reasons for thinking each of these and does so fairly and humbly.The other area Lennox draws a line on is that humans are made in the image of God. That we are special and unique. He goes on to discuss why this makes sense even if you believe in an old earth with evolutionary periods mixed with super natural events. There are things in here and parts of his theology I'm not sure I agree with (Satan corrupting the earth before Human's sinned), but then, they aren't the main things and certainly not worth missing out on the main message and subject of this book and I don't claim to have studied enough to earn an opinion. Lennox continually points readers back to what Genesis says about who God is and why we are here, and removes the barrier of choosing between atheism evolution or young-earth creationist as the debate has recently been reduced to. There is some rational, scientifically savvy middle ground.All this to say, I only made it to (not through) 300-level college sciences. I got as high in math as I could until it started going all abstract art-language on me. I'm not a genius and I don't consider myself scientifically well-read. I enjoyed reading a brilliant Christian mathematician argue that reason, science and God can share the same space and not deteriorate the authority of scripture. I've long been doubtful of a literal 24 hour interpretation of Genesis as I wonder when the angel rebellion happened? They are creatures/created... when were they cast out? I also even more simply wonder how Adam could name all the animals and get lonely in a single day. My personal feelings on it all is that I am comfortable not knowing how God pulled it off. I believe he made it all, and he did it on purpose, and that each person bears elements of God's image. This book reminded me of two things. First, to be humble and know what I don't know, and secondly, try to be open-minded in my interpretation of scripture and not draw false lines in the sand... Like the earth is fixed, or it has to be young.Ultimately I've walked away with the thought that Natural Science can help interpret the Bible, when you believe God to be the author of both.

This is not an exhaustive look at Genesis, science, or Christianity by any means. However, it is a great starting place for anyone who wants to learn more about the different views regarding the “seven days of creation.”The author starts off with an overview of the “fixed earth” controversy from the time of Galileo. He points out that the church and science seemed to be at odds with each other on a very important point, but now the church acknowledges the “moving earth” facts (the sun is fixed in space and the earth orbits around it). He uses this to show that it is not impossible for science and Christianity to see eye to eye.The author steers clear of anything “too scientific” (at least in language) for the layman to understand, but he still hits on a lot of points that you could follow up on and gives reference to other works that do go in depth.He also doesn’t preach, but does clearly state that he is a Christian (and a scientist) and thus gives the Gospel message full weight in his discussion. He connects Genesis with the rest of the Bible in a very clear and theologically correct way.Overall, it’s a good read that I recommend to any Christian (or non-Christian) who wants to learn more about how the Bible and science interact with each other.

I read this book as part of my research for the "One Verse Podcast."It's hard to disagree with a man who has 3 Doctorates.And I don't disagree ... not exactly. This book is full of great insights into how to understand Genesis 1 from a scientific perspective.It is just that this book is little more than a basic introduction to some of the issues and themes surrounding Genesis 1, and even then, some of the points made the book seem to be poorly researched and explained.For example, on page 125, he quoted K. A. Kitchen as saying that while there are numerous analogies between Genesis 1-2 and the Babylonian Enuma Elish, there is not direct relationship between the two, and so we must abandon any attempt to see any connection or correlation.In my own research, I have found exactly the opposite, and a large number of contemporary Bible scholars are seeing more and more correlation and connection between Genesis 1-2 and the Enuma Elish, and not only that, but also with the Egyptian and Canaanite creation stories as well.I do think, however, that his explanation of the word "yom" (day) is spot on (pp. 49-52), as well as his explanation of the so-called "creation" of the sun, moon, and stars on the fourth day (pp. 58-60). His explanations are short, but accurate.Ultimately, this book, while good, is little more than an introduction to some of the key themes and issues surrounding the interpretation and understanding of Genesis 1 in light of modern science.

I first read the Tao Te Ching in college. Somewhere along the line I lost that copy so I decided to pick up this one (especially since it had such high reviews). This copy seemed much different than the one I read years back. And I am not just talking about the author's choice to use female pronouns as well as male pronouns in his version (incidentally - how close can one get to awareness of Tao if one allows oneself to get hung up on seeing "He" rather than "She" in the teachings?).In one portion of this "tao de ching: A New English Version" ("Version" is the key word) the author chooses to translate "When the Tao is absent in a country,/ war horses are bred on the borders" to "When a country goes counter to the Tao, Warheads are stockpiled outside the cities". This author has written his "modernized" version of the Tao Te Ching and he claims to have been open in this fact, supposedly by him using the terms "A New English Version". When one reads further one in the notes you see the author admitting he does not even know Chinese (so his interpretation of the Tao is from other translations - and how he thinks the lines should read for poetics sake, or P.C. sake, etc).At first I thought I would not write a review on this book. But when seeing the author admit to what I had suspected it made me feel like I really got ripped off. If you are looking for a translation of the Tao Te Ching do not get this author's book. The author respects the Tao but this is not the real deal. I will be purposefully losing this book and looking for a better translation.

I turned it over in my hands and it was clearly very short in length, so I decided to just read a few pages while I finished my morning coffee.One and a half hours later I had finished the book entirely, along with my coffee, and I immediately knew upon completion that I would read this book many, many more times in my life.It was a highly profound, dare I say life changing read that dramatically impacted my perspective towards my own happiness and how I interact with others. Written as a collection of very short, almost poem-like chapters, often each occupying less than a single page, this book is a masterfully crafted guide to find real happiness and fulfillment in your life. It is a tome that empowers you, humbles you, and leads you around the pitfalls that so many humans fall into throughout their lives.It is not a modern self help book with life-hacks, habit forming tips, or other such articulations, but rather a fundamental, deep, and moving look at what makes up a fulfilling life.If you are someone who has discovered mindfulness, explores meditation, or ponders philosophy, then this book is, without question, a must-read.And if you are more of a go-getter. This book is very confusing to read because of the way its been printed. There's no uniformity; Instead of having one verse per page and then a commentary section, there's several verses on one page with different types and sizes of font throughout so visually it looks very cluttered and crammed together and it's not enjoyable to read. It looks like a cheap, self-publishing project gone wrong. It's such an important text, it's disappointing that they didn't take more care to make it more readable.

The overview of design principles described in the first half of the book are interesting. I certainly became more aware of the kinds of poor design choices outlined and certainly learned a few things that will be helpful in my communications and systems development role at work.The explanations of the psychology behind product interaction are, to me, poorly organized and explained. Further, if you've read any psychology or behavioral economics before, there's little to be learned here.Finally, the writing itself is fairly poor. I read nonfiction almost exclusively, so I don't think it's the technical nature of the content; it's just not very engaging. The personal anecdotes, as other reviews have noted, often feel forced and a little self-congratulatory. A better editor would have helped, too. There were quite a few instances of small annoyances such as using "less" where "fewer" was needed, or an overabundance of "as a result" towards the end.

If studying human factors engineering, human computer interaction, or any other related field; your professors, peers, and colleagues will reference this book and Don Norman. I keep this on my desk at work and continue to use it when explaining heuristics to clients, engineers or data scientists.

So far, the content is informative and interesting. However, I would think a book about design would be well designed. The section headings on the left sided pages are so far to the right I have to crack the spine all the way open to read many of them. This is so annoying to me I don't know if I can finish reading it. The small, grainy graphics are also dismaying. It's difficult to have confidence in the author's expertise when so little thought is put into the presentation.

This is essential and timeless reading for any designer. It's tough to get through, ironically because it's a book about usability and accessibility in design and it's just oceans upon oceans of text. But Donald Norman is brilliant and the ideas are sound. Consider that the original book was written long before the internet and that the revised edition in the late 90's or early 00's hadn't really gone out of date. The principles are still completely relevant and not dependent on fads or changing technology. If you are an artist, industrial designer, graphic designer, tech industry professional, or just a curious human, read this book. Don't let the Norman door hit you on the way out. (What does that even mean? Well, read the book and find out!)

Its a good book with great examples. It does shed some light on the troubles with design and shows problems from another perspective and it should be rightfully considered as one of the key books regarding design in general. However, It's quite shallow and the author doesn't go into much of a detail. Don't get me wrong, I am not a literary critic or anything but as a European, the style is not a strong suit. People, who are used to the American style of literature are going to be fine, but sometimes there is too much repetition of ideas and a bit deeper analysis of the problem would be beneficial. To sum up. The contribution of the author in the field of proper and functional design is huge and the terminology used is crucial for understanding the key principles of design is paramount. But I would go into a bit more detail.

This book is more of an INTRO or PRE-101 to user/human-centered design. Norman is really good at introducing concepts and painting it with examples. I only wish that this book picked our brains more. There could have been many times he could have displayed the information in fun, amusing, and even trivial ways. It felt like he was giving us the cheat-sheet without doing what great teachers do: use creative means to present the information. This book is a primer, so if you are expecting some sick UX skill-based tips and tricks, you are out of luck. The text is foundational information that helps create a thought-leading designer. In a classroom setting, using this book would be fantastic. It lends some great inspirational food-for-thought for the aspiring designer. There are many broad concepts, each with endless possibilities for lesson plans and teaching material.

A pamphlet may be able to be reduced to a single-page flow chart. It's a Norman book in the same way a terrible door is a Norman door. That assumes its purpose is to inform the reader in a succinct manner, and not generate money for the author who mentions his other works many times throughout. It's exceptionally good at generating revenue; maybe I'm applying his solution to the wrong problem, the correct problem being 'I need money for a boat.'

This book was assigned in a UX/UI college class, and I'm not done with it but I've read enough to know I hate it and honestly can't believe my school treats this book like it's the bible of design or something. I'm used to academic topis being studied with rigor, and this book is 95% one person sharing his opinion and experience (with a few mentions of studies) . In other words it's just anecdotal. And it reads like a crotchety old man who complains about everything. Like, he can find the problem with every design, but doesn't spend half as much time talking about good design.To summarize, I find this book weak regarding the validity of it since it's just one person's opinion, it creates the experience of just listening to someone complains about everything, and doesn't leave me feeling like I'm learning any useful design skills.
