I enjoyed reading this book. Ariel Roth's thoughtful coverage of each topic begins with a basic introduction to help the non-expert understand the issues involved, then proceeds to a succinct description of the evidence. ...This book reflects a thoughtful commentary from an experienced scientist on a topic of great importance to informed people interested in the relation between faith and science. References to the scientific literature are abundant and include many recent references. ...In summary, this book is an excellent summary of current scientific data implying God's existence. It belongs in your library. --College and University Dialogue 20:3. 2008, pp 21-22.I enjoyed reading this book. Very well written book.

Man, I just can't let this pass by unanswered. The dude that rated this book with one star and said in his review that the laboratory tests using electrical energy, tubes, carbon and other junk, proved that molecules with the proper building blocks to sustain and bring about life were indeed created in the laboratory, was wrong. This testing and reports of success were determined long ago to be a farce, as cheating was found to be the rule of the day and that the results were scientifically unsuccessful and woefully short of the intended mark. Let's get even simpler than that; It was put together by an intelligent being in the first place. Read this book, The Genesis Conflict, and Darwin's Black Box, among others. Sorry dude, just naming scientists and their books and reports, does NOT change facts of creation. Evolutionists have to have a bigger or comparable faith in their god—atheism—than I do in my God which is great.

I have another title by this author that i enjoyed, so I felt confident that this would also be a good book, which indeed it is. It covers many topics cogently, such that I was frequently hi-lighting various passages for future reference.

For a scientist who addresses the *correct* science behind these issues, you really should look at Francis Collins' famous and excellent book The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief. This work by the Director of the Human Genome Project describes how in-depth study of molecular evolution actually *strengthened* his belief in God, and lays out a clear, well-informed scientific rationale. In contrast, Roth offers little insight directly from his scientific work (which involves anatomy and chemical ecology).I should admit, as a disclaimer, that I have not read the whole book. But what I did notice while flipping through it was disheartening to say the least. Roth's basic argument seems to be that, since science doesn't yet have all the answers about where life and the universe came from, the creationist viewpoint must necessarily be correct and science must necessarily have everything wrong. The section entitled "The Scientific Evidence for God" illustrates why a zoologist shouldn't try to write about biochemistry and physics, and contains such tired, misleading, and patently false claims as:"Science has not been able to provide any plausible scenarios as to how life could have emerged by itself." Scientists in fact have shown how many building block chemicals of life can be formed when a mixture of simple gases and water is hit by lightning, or even comes in contact with reactive metallic ores (see The Spark Of Life: Darwin And The Primeval Soup). They have also shown how cells can form and divide spontaneously due to basic chemical principles. They've shown how life may have started based on RNA, and gradually developed the ability to synthesize proteins as well (see The RNA World, 2nd edition (Monograph 37) (Cold Spring Harbor Monograph)). In fact there is an entire branch of science, Abiogenesis, devoted to the chemical origin of life. But Roth doesn't even acknowledge and dismiss this centuries-old discipline; instead, he ignores it completely."When we study the advanced eye, it does not look as though it could have evolved." This is another commonly used but misinformed argument for intelligent design - and judging by the tenuous wording, Roth himself seems to know how shaky this ground is. Plenty of scientists have plotted out a clear path for how the eye may have evolved, starting with photosensitive spots that can tell only light from dark, through the development of simple and then more complex optics (see In The Blink Of An Eye: How Vision Sparked The Big Bang Of Evolution, and a prominent online encyclopedia, whose name I cannot type here)."The usual sudden emergence of most of the major plant and animal groups does not suggest that evolution ever occurred." First, plants of various types had existed for 400 million years before flowering plants, by far the most diverse and widespread class of plants on earth, ever evolved. Other classes of plants evolved faster, but still on the timescale of tens to hundreds of millions of years. And animals took nearly the same amount of time to evolve their current diversity. It's hard to argue that this emergence counts as "sudden"; in fact we humans have little concept of how long a million years even is. Nor does evolution have to be slow: as any doctor will tell you, countless bacteria evolve resistance to our drugs in a matter of a few years, faster than we can develop and test new drugs. The diversity of the Cambrian explosion, if anything, argues for the power of evolution, not for its impossibility."If we simply evolved, self-centered behavior and desires would be precisely what should survive." How many people do you know who really exhibit no self-centered desires or behaviors? How many children do you know who aren't naturally selfish, before society has had the chance to break them of this habit? Does the typical person you know give large chunks of their wealth to the poor, or do they spent it on themselves (despite the fact, ironically, that their religion usually tells them to be more altruistic)? It's true that our senses of morality and self-awareness are uniquely human, but scientists have argued for the evolutionary origins of these traits too (see The Moral Animal: Why We Are, the Way We Are: The New Science of Evolutionary Psychology)."At present, scientists have essentially shut the door to any consideration of God in science." Again Roth has failed to look at the data, which actually indicates that a large percentage of scientists - 30 to 40 percent, depending on what they study - believe in God. This rate is about half that of the American public, but it certainly does not constitute a shutting of the door. The idea *not* supported by evidence is that all scientists think as Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins do. Paul Davies, Francis Collins, and Alister McGrath, for example, have argued extensively for the plausible harmony of scientific and religious world views. For Roth to blatantly ignore these prominent thinkers' ideas is both counterproductive and disappointing.Nice try, Dr. Roth. But unfortunately you make creationists look about as bad as Dawkins makes atheists look.
